Battery Registration

I recently bought a 2013 535i with just under 129,000 miles that is in the shop (BMW dealership service dept.) due to the instrument cluster lights intermittently flickering. The technician stated that he can't duplicate the issue. He also said that the alternator is good, but he thinks the battery is the original and recommends that it be replaced soon. After looking over the paperwork that the previous owner gave me, the same shop had replaced and registered the battery back in March 2017, so going on 8 years. They charge $656.30 to replace/install/register a new battery. It's easy to install a battery, but can I use the BimmerLink (by SG Software GmbH & Co. KG) iPhone app or a BMW OBD Scanner (e.g., Foxwell NT510 Elite) to register the battery myself, or is it necessary to have them register the battery? TIA!

You can only use BimmerLink to register if you're replacing it with the exact same Ah battery, so double check your current one's Ah rating.

The current battery's rating is 105Ah. Do I need an OBD adapter like the app says in order to register the battery or is the adapter just to read codes and sensor values?

The OBD adapter is needed to connect to the car. That said, I would recommend an ENET cable rather than a WiFi or BT adapter. More versatile for BMW applications. Can find them for pretty cheap on Amazon.
