Burning Oil

I have a 550I and when I had less than 2000 miles I got an alarm low oil. I took the car to the dealer and they told me this was normal and topped it off. Now the car has 3800 miles and I got the same alarm, I took it to the dealer and they told me it is normal. This time I had to pay for the oil they told me BMW does not cover topping off the oil. I followed the break in procedure and I am wondering if this is normal.

Some people report using about a quart every 4K miles and others have gone 7-8K before they need the first quart. I'm not sure if these oil burners are the exception or the rule, I'll have to wait until I get my car to see if mine will be an oil burner too. None of my last previous and current cars in the last ten years has used any oil at all but none are or have been BMWs, this is my first BMW ever. BMW will say it is "normal" unless you are adding a quart every 1K miles.

My car complained about low oil after 4500 miles. Added 0.5 quart and it's better now.

All my new BMW's have used NO Oil at all.
I hope the 550i M Sport will be the same, running it in correctly as per recommended has been my way and seems the right way.

The V8 seems to like drinking oil, but it would appear that you have BMW's assurance that it's normal and that's the main thing. Anyone concerned about the additional running costs would be less worried had they gone for a diesel. My 535d now has 3k miles and the oil level is exactly where it was on delivery - at the top notch on the dipstick. I'm also averaging 40mpg and on a new engine at that; as it loosens up that should improve closer to 45. Not bad for 0-100kph in 5.7 sec!

I bought my 320d touring new in 2006. I never had to add oil at all, now 100K (and sold for new 5-er ), and now (recently) I have to add a quarter of a liter. Not bad, I guess.

Can't help wondering what it was about the second quart/litre consumed that your dealer felt was your responsibility after giving you the first one without charge.

This "free Oil top up" is none existant in the UK, if I asked my dealer to top up my oil, I think he would tell me to "go buy it".

I just added another quart at 5800 miles. The engines gets very hot, it even has a warning when you pop open the hood when the engine is hot. I went to add a quart and you could see the heat rising out off the oil fill.

I saw this too on my 535i. It was odd as I have never seen that before. Not sure what it means though.

3 qts in less than 6k miles? That is alot of oil to burn? I dont know how that can be normal, at this rate you'll never need an oil change. By the time you get to 15k you'll have already replaced all the original oil one qt at a time. I wonder if this is their idea of worry free maintenance? I would try to have them find out from some one who knows as the service techs just know how to follow instructions.
