Nope... shame. All of my BMWs have been Jet Black... guess I'll never buy an M5. That said, you can get matte... but I'm not a fan of the maintenance or the look in all circumstances. Jet black truly is my favorite color on a BMW sedan... deep, dark, and pure black. Sapphire is OK, but it's definitely more grey when compared side by side due to the metallic bits.

I guess because they say so just as you can't get sapphire on a 5 series m sport!
Definitely sporty but much bigger PITA (have in my weekend car). When not next to each other you can hardly tell the difference. I have a jet black 550 coming in next week and already dread it. Would have very much preferred sapphire like my current X5. |

Otherwise, there's a very noticeable difference to me; side-by-side and standing alone; totally different. As difficult as Jet Black is to maintain, it's worth it, in my opinion. Why didn't you go with Sapphire Black on your incoming 550? |

Either way, they don't give us the option... At least without a charge. |

As with most of BMW's moves it's bound to be that the take rates on JB were super low in the past, especially with all the much more desirable alternate metallic blacks available.
As someone who has owned and currently has stupidly picked up yet another Jet Black BMW (2011 335) - they are beyond miserable. The Dark Graphite on my F10 is superior in every possible way to Jet black....I hate jet black (never again!). At least with the metallic blacks you have a slight chance of hiding some of the swirls.

Difficult to maintain or not, there's a reason you've had multiple.

Both were only due to options choices on 3yr old lease returns. For example the 2002 330i Sport I bought in 2005 was the only sport package MT CPO I could find anywhere at the time. The 2011 335i I picked up in December was the ONLY non-Xi 335 sedan with the cold weather package anywhere on the west coast (had to have fold down rear seats).
Both grey cars I've had since 2000 I ordered.

Nevertheless, it should be a standard color on the whole model range. Can anyone confirm if there'd be an additional charge for Jet Black on an F10 M5? |

I find it hard to believe that the lack of the color is due to it being "less desirable." The deep, dark black you get with jet black is much sportier than a speckled, glittery-looking sapphire. For most I've spoken to they'll opt for sapphire simply to keep the "maintenance" down even if they agree it's a little less sporty and menacing-looking.
That said, I'd also find it hard to believe that M5 owners are considering maintenance above looks. We're talking about a six-figure super-sedan... not a minivan. I'd say owners would opt for sporty looks above all. Seems baffling to me. My 550xi MSport is the 3rd jet black BMW for me. I've never had a problem maintaining them. I let them get dirty, then I wash them... it's that simple. When dirty, they look like any dirty black or dark colored car. When clean, though, they look like nothing else... like a glass ocean of black.

its odd choice my BMW.
The E39 came with Black Sapphire but the current F10 m-sport cannot have that colour (but the M5 can). I'd have thought given how much a M5 is you can whatever damn colour you want! Although not cheap, I do think the Citrin Black is a very nice colour and one Id have gone for if finances allowed. |

I don't see Jet Black 668 on M3/M4 builds either.
I'm sure you can individual order it for $5k though! meh

All of that said, nothing looks as GREAT as jet black. When it's clean, it looks deep, dark, and rich. It's also sporty and menacing... whereas metallic colors are a bit more glittery and sparkly since the light gets reflected off of all the little metallic bits. But because the metallic bits also reflect light all over the place, it makes it look less deep and rich as well. The way I see it... if you're looking for a deep black color, and you want something more sporty, get the jet black. If you just want a black car, and easier maintenance (less frequent washes, less concern about micro-swirls, etc) are most important to you, get the sapphire black. But to the OP's original post, it's baffling why BMW would remove the jet black option from the M5... unless it had something to do with demand, too many other black options, etc. It would be curious to know.

Jet Black is by far imo the best color to have on a BMW. One of the best, I've only had the one I own now, I'm sure once I get it out of my system I might like their signature blue or alpine white, but dude, Jet black beamer? c'mon. I don't like my black sapphire metallic as much as JB. can't say enough about it, would def spring for an individual order on an M5, that's my plan for the next one!

Not everyone could handle jet black maintenance and not everyone's definition of clean good condition paint is the same.
Most people put a JB car through a car wash and to them the car looks perfect/flawless. I am one of those people that will see a semi clean car with tons of swirl marks all over the car under certain lighting that would drive me insane. This why some think this color is a nightmare to maintain while others don't see a problem at all. I would never ever buy a JB car unless it's a garage queen and I have all the time in the world to keep the paint pristine. If you are OCD about keeping your paint in flawless condition JB would consume a big part of your free time lol Alan

But I keep coming back to it. Why? Because when the car is clean (and done properly) there's just nothing like it. It's stunning - like looking into a black ocean or mirror. But I will say this - my car has the benefit of staying in the garage more days in the week than it's out. I work from home, so the car doesn't get driven everyday.. and it tends to stay a BIT cleaner for a longer period of time. So I do agree with your statement that if someone is OCD and will get easily out of whack over dirt, dust, water marks, etc, and they don't have time to dedicate to cleaning the car, jet black is probably a really bad idea. I was "this close" to getting dark grey this time around... just love how it looks. While the black is alluring to me in many ways, whether you choose jet black OR sapphire, it still has one other downfall in my mind... which is that it has the potential to mute the lines and curves of the car. The F10 wears it pretty well... but some cars just look totally muted to me in black.
