I test drove a 2014 last week and drove for a while in Eco Pro mode for about 20 minutes city only. It was using about 9L/100 km (24.5mpg). I decided on a 2013 535 X Drive which arrives next week. I'll let you know what the mileage is like in both Eco Pro and non Eco Pro modes.

I had a 2011 535xi, 95% city driving. My average was 17mpg. I was able to get 32mpg on a 600km highway drive averaging just over 100 km/h. Now I have a 535xd (530xd-euro) and after the first 2,000kms, my average for the same 95% city driving is 23mpg.

How do you like the car's performance compared to your 2011?

Grover, I like the diesel over the petrol. You notice the additional torque. It is less peppy, but at the same time feels more powerful. For around town I find it is a more relaxed drive in the diesel, the power delivery is smoother and engine is never revving much. Besides saving a little on gas, stopping less to fill up is a bonus (especially as winter approaches, and it's fun watching others at the gas station. You just know half of them think I'm accidentally filling my car with diesel. In fact, it has happened a few times that another person filling their car will say "you know that's diesel?"

I made the same move -- 2011 535ix to a 2014 535d xDrive. Gas mileage averaged around 23mpg (70/30 highway/local) in the 2011 (using 91 octane) and while the 2014 is far from broken in, my first 600 miles have gotten me about 35mpg with a similar split on the first tank.
Power-wise, I think they're pretty equal. Not sure I agree with AVIMAX on being less peppy - I tend to drop the transmission into sport before jumping on the accelerator, but will take more notice. On my 535ix, there was a definite lag between hitting the gas and the car pouncing -- told my service guys and they said it was normal, but I thought it was BS. Dropping the transmission into S-mode took care of that. But the car has a sweet growl and you can hear the power when it takes off. ... and the looks at the diesel pump ARE amazing Audi's new commercial for their diesel hits the topic spot-on. .

When I say peppy, I mean only the feel of a diesel compared to a petrol engine. Maybe my description of peppy is not the right word, but while the speed and acceleration is close between the 2 cars, the feel of the 2 cars is quite different. The power comes in more of a growing wave with the diesel.
My 535ix also had a delay in the throttle which I think was purely electronic, not turbo related. |

Hello,
Might as well start my posting somewhere! 2014 550i, 50/50 city and highway. Averaging 22mpg combined. I'm pretty enthusiastic around town, but try to be frugal on the HW to save gas there. Tough when the car has an open exhaust and sounds this good. |

2011 535i - 25.9 mpg
And I'm surprised that's with my driving style..in my 330xi I get 14.5 - 15mpg. The 5er has that blue EfficientDynamic technology; I figure thats why it keeps up, efficiency wise, with our '12 Civic that gets 28mpg. All while being a beast |
