Steering wheel noise
I have a noise comin from the car...if the steering wheel is in straight or neutral and I move it left to right real quick I'm getting a tapping noise or clicking.. it happens if car is on or off...sounds can be heard from inside and outside of car and sounds like it's comin from the steering column behind the engine any ideas?

I had the same on my late 2011 535ix... BMW replaced the steering shaft and steering gearbox, the sound or clunk noise has been reduced but still there; mine only does it when the steering is on the center position with the engine running or not, if you move the steering wheel left or right and try to replicate the clunk noise will not do it... weird...

The last time...
I had a clicking like you describe, it was in a Chevrolet Pickup (1995) and it was the upper steering column bearing, just beneath the steering wheel. Maybe that's it?

i had that sound then heard a crack when i was making a turn and the all the functions on the steering wheel went dead except for the steering itself. (heated wheel, horn, radio functions , airbag malfunction.) turned out the slip ring was defective and it cracked but was fully covered under warranty
