I’ve had a wide range of loaners throughout the years; 328i, 335i, 528i, 535i, X5 3.5i and X6 5.0i, but earlier today I received an X1 2.8i and it’s the biggest piece of crap ever! Feel like I’m driving an American made rental. Only plus is that I’m the first to drive it, as it was given to me with 10 miles on the odometer.

I was once offered a Kia as loaner. I told the guy I ain't driving this crap box and he had to get me another one ... well, not much better at all, a Chevy Impala ... mind you, not new at all, it has about 10,000 miles on the clock already.

I agree ... I recently changed the dealership that I service at to a closer dealer, and they have much crappier loaners ... 1 series, X1 and 3 series ... at the previous dealer I received 5 series, x5, x6 as loaners.

I recently had the X1 28i ... i would agree ... POS

I enjoying browsing through many of the BMW boards here (long time BMW owner) and just wanted to add my 2 cents to this thread. My brother just picked up a 2011 550i a couple months ago, so hopefully I'm not thread jacking too much here!

I picked up a 2014 Sparkling Bronze over Oyster X1 sDrive28i xLine about 1.5 months ago. I was never even considering the X1 until my wife and I saw this one on the BMW showroom floor while I had my 2000 E38 740iL in for service (which I replaced with this car!). Our is loaded with pretty much everything except the HK radio (Premium, Ultimate, sport steering wheel, heated seats, lighting package). Surprisingly I LOVE the 2.0T engine and the 8 speed transmission! This thing hauls butt and I really dig the melody it sings!

I'm just wondering if your X1 loaners were an absolute base model. There is a big difference in equipment and ride from the higher end trims vs a base. And you have to remember the X1 has the lowest starting MSRP of any BMW sold in the US. To me the X1 as we have it equipped really drives wonderfully and has almost all the bells and whistles of higher end models. Definitely not even remotely a POS! As a car that has a bit more utility than a standard sedan (we have a 6 year old son so it comes in handy) yet performs with all the BMW traits...it was a big win / win for me. I've had a big grin on my face driving this thing around for the 1500 miles I've had it so far!

Yes, the loaner I have is base, but has navigation.

Started the car yesterday, put it in drive and as I gave it gas it stalled - TWICE!? I shut it down, waited a couple of minutes, started it up, waited a minute, put it in drive, waited a few seconds and drove off. Hasn't happened since. Not sure what happened.

Hard to show by pictures, but there's something un-BMW-like about it's interior. The parts clearly look BMW, but the seating position, ergonomics and where everything is placed, from the shifter to the armrest; something is amiss.

Nevertheless, now that I've had more time with the car and driven it into the city three times since having it (over 100 miles done on it so far), I'm warming up to the way it drives and appreciate all that's packed into it for the price, but can still understand the shock upon first driving off in it (and still am shocked), if that makes any sense. Not sure why they didn't make an Audi Allroad-like 3 Series Touring instead.

Not a fan of the design, but for an X1, yours looks nice.

I'm happy just to get a loaner for a day or two. Couldn't care less what it is. Just my $02.

ScottMZ3 .... I mean no offense to you ... your X1 is much nicer than the loaner I was given. My loaner was a base, no navigation, fake leather seats, no suspension upgrades.

My point was to compare the different vehicles given as loaners between the 2 dealerships. Although the original dealer was a bit "out-of-my-way" ... I prefer to use them, as I'm paying a hefty sum to "rent" my 550xi from BMW ... so atleast I can get something comparable to drive when they are servicing their $90k vehicle.

Agreed. The 2.8 runs at 80% of its design and this makes it fun to wind out.

No offense taken! Just wanted to be sure people know the X1 is actually a very capable and fun BMW! BMW has done very little marketing for the X1 here in the US from what I have seen...and it really is a gem when optioned appropriately.

FYI, if you get another X1 loaner that has a few more options...be sure to disable the auto-start stop feature and slap the gear shift into DS mode. Transforms the car!

As an update, shortly before returning the loaner, I accidentally learned that the center arm rest can slide forward to cover the cup holder, which significantly adds to comfort!

At my dealer, they usually give out 3-series loaners (the one time I've had to have a repair done). They're nice enough. Really, the only reason I bought a 5 over a really loaded-up 3 is because I'm tall and my hair scrapes the roof in most cars, which drives me crazy. The 5 is perfect for me.

You have to figure, though: Product line refinement implies that base products are just not going to be as nice as the products higher up the line. I really don't ever want to drive a 6 or 7, because I love my 5 and don't want to be rudely introduced to its shortcomings.
