Winter Wheel Suppliers?

Now that winters approaching I'm considering a set of winter wheels.

I had a quote from BMW of 1980 quid supplied and fitted for a set of 18" wheels, style 365 with the continental contact TS830P tyres.

Any suggestions for cheaper options, or OEM alternatives?

Thanks all in advance!

I just bought an unmarked set of 17" SE alloys shod with Michelin alpin tyres off eBay. Tyres still have 5-6mm of tread left. £550 delivered which I consider to be a bit of a bargain. Loads more on eBay, several German sellers who will post.

http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/

I am getting a replacement alloy from this company, they do OEM BMW wheels. They are also competitive on tyres and can supply them fitted and ready to go.

I emailed them and asked for a discount over and above their website price, which was cheaper than BMW, they gave me an extra 10% and that's just on one wheel... If you don't ask you don't get!

Might be worth giving them a try

BTW told them that I had recommended them on this forum, I posted a link on the main forum last week.

It might have helped with the discount...

Cool, thanks. Will mention that if I email them.

There's also a plan B which involves buying an X5...

Guys,

Am I correct in saying that the only reason to purchase a 2nd set of wheels rather than just a 2nd set of tyres (Winter run flats) is so that you can change from Summer to Winter tyres yourself rather than having to get a garage to do it?

At the moment I'm thinking of getting 4 x Alpine A5 Run flats at £130 per wheel, rather than shelling out upwards of £1,100 on OEM'd BMW alloys (and that doesn't include any tyres).

Am I missing something here?

Cheers,
Jocky

Exactly that. Plus multiple changes of wheels damages the bead, especially on "stiff" RFTs, and even more so on ultra-low 18" and 19" profiles. Also, wider tyres as fitted on M-Sport models don't perform as well in winter configurations where a narrower tyre is better.

I've got this set of genuine 17" BMW Winter Wheel pack that's done about 4000 miles. Just need to see if they will fit my incoming F31 - if they don't then these will be up for sale.

Hi Jocky,

Most people tend to prefer "a little more rubber" when it comes to winter wheels. I run on 19" wheels but no-one makes a winter tyre that would fit on a 19" wheel (without paying a fortune anyway). If you go with a 17" wheel then you'll probably get the best results. I'll probably go with 18" rims though purely for cosmetic reasons - I'm vain like that :-)

Technically, answer is Yes.

Although many people who have the alloy+tyre will still get it done at a garage. It's all about convenience and time.

Swapping 4 wheels does not take too long, either at garage or yourself (if you have the will and time and enough space and the equipment). Swapping 4 tyres on the other hand is going to take a while.

Also, if you are changing tyres (and not the whole set), means having to get the wheels balanced each time you take tyres on and off. ... All adds up to the cost.

The reason most people do it at the dealerships is that the dealer takes care of everything. Swapping the wheels, keeping the old ones... so you drive in and drive out. And yes.... this convenience does have a price tag at the dealership

I've got 19" wheels on mine so just kept an eye on E bay for winters over the Autum, I put the winters on the standard 19" wheels and bought a set of 19" M reps which I put the summer tyres back on, having said that there wasn't any need as last winter was so mild.

Hi "The beast", did you proceed with using “Alloy Wheels Direct”, if yes, was the service any good? I am from London but currently residing in Ireland hence need to make sure delivery and service is good.

I haven't yet Martin, been to busy to organise. Some pillock scraped my front bumper and ran off, so getting that repaired at BMW first... Hopefully get around to it in the next few weeks.

I must say that they have responded to all of email queries promptly so far.

Thanks for your feedback! I agree they responding to my e-mails with no delays! I am going for the Spare wheel, the quote from BMW dealers both side UK & Ireland come up to above 500 Euros (£400+) way up in price compare to what I paid for the E60 one! Alloys Drirect price is at least £100 cheaper, even with delivery to Ireland, I also believe this is a German Co, the number from the one responding to my e-mails points that way.

New to the Forum. Just bought a 2013 F10. I live in Ohio and need to get some winter wheels and tires to make it around the next 5 months. I came across a winter set of wheels from a 2008 M5 (E60) 20 inches. Does anybody know if the bolt pattern will fit on my F10?

The bolt pattern and centre bore are the same but the offset is miles out - bottom line is they won't fit.

Yeah I think the parent company is German and that they have a UK office. All emails contain both German and English transcription for Job Titles, etc.

Are you getting the tyre from them as well?

Let us know if the delivery is up to scratch...

Garage List
Alcar Stahl-wheels (aka KFZ) allegedly manufacture 17" 8J's - but I cant find more details ... really, a steel rim would be fine and cheaper ... perhaps that's why they cant be sourced for BMW

Hi all,

When I look at various websites, even the price of OEM wheels and tyres is around £1500 - £1600, so only a few hundred less than going to BMW.

However, on tyreleader.co.uk they have wheels for £71 per quarter :

Carmani CA 9 Compete 8x17 5x120 ET30 72.6 (Black, Matt)

Why are these so cheap? Is it because they are aluminium wheels? If so, does that matter?

My gut feeling is that they are too cheap, but if I could get away with them on my F11 I could save a stack of cash.

Advice appreciated!

When you put it like that...... hmmm.....

On the other hand, to take the Top Gear approach, what could possibly go wrong?

Anyone have any experience with Borbet XR alloys? They seem to be sold in quite a lot of places on line.
