BMW Internet Access
Can someone advise if, does the ConnectedDrive internet access require the phone to have Bluetooth PAN or DUN profile ? I can't seem to find that info anyone. Further more, has anyone successfully access the internet with an Android smartphone ?

Everything I've read says Car-Data (internet, pandora, twitter) requires the "BMW Connected" App, which is currently iPhone only.
"Our sources have indicated that BMW is considering Blackberry and Android versions for later in 2011." http://www.bimmerfile.com/2011/02/23...-connectivity/ There are some reports of the "My BMW Remote" app for android coming soon, but so far no "BMW Connected" http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/10/m...es-to-android/ Browsing the web via the non-touch-non-mouse car screen sounds like a gimmick more than useful. Personally I'd just like the ability to push a map-address from a phone to a car-nav easily. That way I could use the phone's nice touch-screen, internet access, and open-ecosystem of apps to get a location (google maps, opentable, yelp, etc), and yet not have to spend time entering it into the car nav. It would be super easy to do, but it would require some support on both sides. I can dream... AFAIK, with an Android phone you can use Bluetooth Handsfree (HFP), Audio Streaming (A2DP, on newest idrive models), addressbook sharing (PBA) , and (if your android phone has MAP, not all android phones do) text-message display. |

I believe the Iphone App is merely added application. The car itself has a web browser and it just needs a phone to tether with using bluetooth, using either the PAN or DUN profile. If it uses the PAN profile, then any smartphone that supports the PAN profile will be able to tether to it and allow internet access. I'm just trying to find it if it does in fact use the PAN profile or not. My Android phone doesn't have it but has the DUN profile. After pairing to the car, i do get the "Data Transfer" icon avalible , but can't access the internet yet. So if it uses the PAN profile, then i know it's my phone's problem.

There is a thread about a user attaching an iPod Touch to the BMW as a "proxy" between BMW Connected and Bluetooth DUN. The iPod touch had to be jailbroken to install the root-required "iBluever" bluetooth DUN "client", so the touch can act as the dun client.
He also implies that the car uses DUN as well, because he says: "Also the Blackberry can handle the Bluetooth DUN connection to the iPod and the car at the same time for different services of course." http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10557848 You can get bluetooth options on android by long-pressing on a paired device in the list. Maybe DUN needs to be enabled specifically? |

When using DUN, your phone acts like a modem. The car will need to dial an ISP number to access the internet, i doubt this is the case. If PAN, your phone acts like a router using it's existing internet connection.

This will depend on whether the car has it's own SIM card or not, and this particular feature is country dependent. I.e. German spec BMWs do have an own SIM card compartment, while the Swiss spec cars must use the Internet connection of the Smartphone.

I use a Blackberry stored in the trunk. Bought a used one just for the car. With this I can use BMW Online (News (RSS feeds), Weather, Panoramia, Street View, Google Local) and Internet. I also use it for the complete Office functionalities (Email, SMS, Calendar, Tasks and Reminders). And of course as a phone. The BB communicate over Bluetooth. If I would like to use BMW Apps, I connect my iPhone to the USB. In my country, we do not have BMW ConnectedDrive, but the only thing that doesnt work is BMW Remote since it uses the SIM-card in the car for communication (ConnectedDrive). The iPhone must be set up to use Personal Hotspot for the BMW Apps. I also use a Twin-SIM so that both phones has the same phonenumber. You must have option 6NR that Bimmer-tech remotely coded in my 09/2010 f10 520d.

Twin and even triple-SIM is offered by national providers over here. DIY - You mean the 6nr? Easy if you are a little handy. |

Has anyone heard of Clearwire? Can you hook this up to the F10 and have internet connection without using a phone? I know you look for a WIFI signal and sign up using a username and password on the clearwire device. I dont think it uses bluetooth signal though. Any thoughts? http://www.clear.com/discover

Check here:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/24079...ur_iphone.html Forget about the WiFi part. Just enable, pair the phone to the car using Bluetooth. |

I'm way confused about a lot of stuff here. I have a 2011 without BMW Apps or any of that stuff (other than Nav). What upgrades do I need to get web on the iDrive?
