Talking Decision Time: 535d or good priced 525d?...... 535d!

Hi. I'm about to bite the bullet and finalize a deal on an F10 this week or the next tops.

The doubt is between a new 535d with more extras valued at aprox. 93000€ vs a used 525d (new 4 cylinder twin turbo engine, 10 months/service car from dealer 20K km) at 57000€.

Main specs:
535d: Carbon Black, Sport Auto, pack M, Pro Nav, 19" wheels (351M), leather, xenon, comfort seats, ceramic controls, head up display, new instrument cluster...

525d: Carbon Black, Sport Auto, pack M, Pro Nav, 19" wheels (351M), alcantara sport seats, xenon.

Both have 5 year or 100K km maintenance inclusive, and the used one has 4 years garantee (from bmw premium selection special campaign) vs 2 year on the new one. The new one will have the construction waiting period...

Which one would you choose? Heart vs Reason

ps. have not yet driven a 525d thus adding to the doubt.

One can't simply compare 50k EUR vs 100k EUR. There are not comparable in ANY way. Same applies to the mods you've chosen IMHO. If you are going to compare, look for a up to 1 y/o 535d F10 Premium Selection. It'll probably have the same extras you've chosen (or at least most of them), including the Service Inclusive, but will cost up to 40% less.

I got my F10 550xi Premium Selection when it was 1 year old for 52k EUR from a BMW dealer. I have loads of extras too, as well as the 5 year warranty. So you either buy new (and spend the extra 30-40k EUR), or you buy used. Either way, you have to make your mind on the engine size (or horsepowers needed)

If the possibility for a premium selection 535d existed i would go for it, but portugal is a small country and there's none available!!

i'm inclined towards 535d, but would like opinions of people who have driven the both cars and if the extra power and engine is worth over 40% of the price of a 525d.

its not exactly comapring apples with apples.
If you can afford to go for teh 535d with all the extras, then do so.
Its never going to make any financial sense (what car does?!)
Perhaps if you pondering over it because of the high cost, perhaps its worth speccing up to the hilt but hanging on to the car for a good number of years.
This is what I have done, my last E39 530i msport I had for 10 years , highly specced so never regretted it.
My F10 530d is highly specced up so it wasn't cheap but I intend to keep it for a simialr amount of time, if you work out teh depereciation over a longer amount of time, its not so bad.
Just might be worth thinking from that angle?

I've drivenm the 520d (the 525d is pretty much the same engine if you're talking about teh 4 cylinder one) and teh 530d and I thought the 6 cylinder was so much better so in my opinion ,I'd go for the 530d or 535d.

Why spend 1 Euro when you can spend 10 Euro.?...I had a 530D, then quickly moved up to a 535D, the twin turbo is fantastic and makes a huge differance. A 535D has 44 % more HP than a 525D and 33% more torque.

Get the 535.
If not for the torque, get it for the chairs.

If you can afford to get the new 535d, I'd say go for it. You'll never regret it. This car has massive torque, I really love it!

With that said, I only buy brand new vehicles should I intend on keeping them for a long period of time - eg. 5+ years, like AP said. My wife drives the family SUV (a Land Cruiser) which I got brand new and will be (hopefully) keeping for a long time to surve its purpose and drive my kids and dogs around safely.

On the other hand, as much as I'd like my bimmers, I tend to change them at shorter periods of time (eg. 1-2 years), usually because of a massive desire for more torque and horsepower - another reason to consider the 535d in the first place

Depreciation value for that period is TREMENDOUS if you buy it brand new. It might be true you lose 80% of the cars' cost in 5-7 years, but you lose 50 of those just the first year or so. I personally don't mind pre-owned cars, should they be in excellent condition (like the Premium Selection program) and have the specific extras I want. Color might be a problem when choosing one tho.

More on Premium Selection - I think no other country in Europe is large enough to provide you with a good spec'd 535d Premium Selection F10 other than Germany. In Germany things are different tho, loads of <1y/o F10's at very reasonable pricing. Since there's no Import tax within the EU and you'd get to drive a 535d on a German highway, checking out at http://mobile.de website might be a worth considering as an option. Just checked, 240+ 535ds of 2011 there, I'm guessing a lot of those are Premium selection vehicles with warranty

When importing used car from germany to portugal taxes are paid, in these price ranges about 20 to 25 thousand euros of taxes!! and the premium selection warranty which should be valid for all europe it's not at all a safe warranty.
Would save that way 15 to 20 thousand euros and could have warranty issues...

I'm much more inclined to the 535d, it's just that here in portugal a good apartment costs that much.... not that i need one (but it leaves one thinking....).

And with the crisis that is envolving our country at the moment one almost feels ashamed of spending that much on cars...

A 535D is a diesel which makes vibrations and lots of non charming noises anyway. It is somewhat less noisy than a 520D, but it is in a different league than any petrol engine in the F10. At highway speeds it is a rocket of course. Do you have a lot of space to drive fast in your area?
Just calculate if it is worth the extra 700€ or so every month.
My 520D have lost 17000€ if I trade it in today for a new car, that is in 11 months and 28000km. A 535D would probably double that.

If you take the 535D, you will notice what a great 6 cylinder engine it is, before my 535D, i had a 335D, again the engine was smooth, powerfull and quiet.

If you are worried about depreciation, why even consider a 520D if you are paying for the car yourself. 80% of BMW sales for the F10/11 are for 520D, so why would you expect this model to hold any value? Look at any BMW dealer they always have them to sell.

Great. The 535D is a great engine. Have you seen the movie Jeremy Clarkson Powered Up?
There is some serious 535 driving in the end.

Ellmat: the world is not black or white I am afraid. I am quite sure the 520D will depreciate much less than a 535D even in UK.
If money was no issue I would go for a 550i or a 535i, but my dealer strongly adviced against it. I dont see the connection who is paying? No matter, you pay anyway even if it is a company car. Or you are saying company cars are free no matter the cost? Then why settle with a BMW?
