Hard wiring a radar detector
Hoping to get some advice. I search the forums and found a few answers but not any definitive ones on the best way to hard wire after market electronics to a F10.
I have a Beltronics (Escort) STI Magnum detector and I have the smart long cable for hard wiring it. any advise on where to pull the power from? Fuse box? any particular fuse? I just don't want it to throw codes and it would be nice if it shuts off once I lock/alarm it. Any advice here is really appreciated. Thanks! |

I have mine mounted on the passenger side sun visor with the visor clip. The direct wire connection goes down the passenger side A pillar into the glovebox (had to pop the end cap). There is an exposed metal frame for the ground and I added a fuse tap onto fuse 48 (mini) for the power. Took a combined 10 minutes to install, and can probably be reversed in 1/2 the time. It helped that I had the trim tools and the add-a-fuse. It was around $5 from Advance Auto parts in case anyone is wondering.
Also, be careful if your passenger puts down the visor, as the radar can be pushed off it and fall. I don't have passengers in my car very often and when I do, I either take it off or warn them not to do it. I did have it on the driver side, but there were times that even with sunglasses, the sun blinds you and you need the visor. The advantage of the driver side is that I could actually see the numbers for the radar frequency, which is much harder to do if installed in the pass side. The great part about the sun visor install is that it's hardly noticeable from outside, thus lessening the chance of theft. I still have the Escort 9500ix, but I've been eying that Passport Max2. Looks pretty sweet. Last edited by marsb007; 01-10-2015 at 01:25 PM.. |
