Spot an imposter F10

So coming over from the F80 fourm, just wanted a few ways to a dressed up 5 series vs. an actual m5. Guy keep parking next to me, keeps saying how is car is an M and blah blah. I could give a rats ass, but I just want to know for myself, I won't even blow his spot over it. Its obvs debadged. My guess for the giveaway is no M brakes like the blue calipers. Is that correct for all m5 models? any other ways to tell. Thanks

Guys please save the "i shouldnt care what anyone else is driving and pissing match dribble" Just want to know Thanks

TL;DR how to tell an m5 is legit?

Quad exhaust, little m5 badges in the side vent/panel, m5 badge in the grille up front, look inside and see if there's an M in the instrument cluster, gear selector is more circular than the one the normal 5 series have. oh, look around the gear selector and see if rather than "comfort/sport," he has suspension/steering/other settings individually. a lot more customization in the m.

if he's missing any of these, it's just something he put on aftermarket (instrument cluster or gear selector would be the biggest pain to do, so id check there).

plus a million other things but someone could have a 528d and it'd have a bunch of m badges, just not in the places i mentioned above.

Thanks for the info guys. LOL I can't believe I have not looked at the exhaust yet as that is a dead giveaway, most of the time. I'll snag some pics when there is daylight. The brake calipers are for sure just your normal steel color and don't look more than 2 piston. Def a poser. Don't care at all to de badge and have the m package. Just dont put fake m5 emblems on the car. But still kinda urks me when people de badge a 320 like WTF... a 550 tho on the other hand i get.

Why are you so worried about this, especially if you are the one that can not tell the difference?

Who cares what the heck the guy is driving.......wait unless of course you are all in middle school..

I am usually of the camp of leave and let live...if a guy is trying to pawn off a 528 as a M5, whatever! What does change that for me is if there is a sense of douchebaggery attached (usually is) or some sort of disdain thrust upon others whilst in progress of living their little lie. That bugs me to no end and I've been on the receiving end of that in business and witnessed it in bars/clubs that truly the "liar" was not really gaining anything by imposing a fake sense of wealth, except to further their little lie and try to make someone else that is innocent, feel shitty. I've seen guys at a club berate a cocktail waitress and claim their watch was worth more than their yearly wage etc etc. and not order a full bottle... It's funny that any of these "financial/ material measures of success" that these trolls tend to exude never correlate to all the other factors that are true indicators of a certain income/ lifestyle. I'm not rich by any means, and I've enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. I worked for a luxury jewelry store while in college and I can spot a fake watch from a mile away. I've since moved on to many boring things, that pay well but I digress. I had a client meeting where the guy had the audacity to give me a fake compliment on my watch only as a segway to try to pawn off his fake Rolex in an exercise of one up-man ship. This being a client, I could not blow him up, but that is a huge douchebag move to claim a $50k 24k Day Date as a genuine wearing a suit that cost $200 from men's warehouse and cheap shoes. I know eccentric rich guys who do not dress well, but that's being in boat shoes and a polo wearing that watch, stepping out of their (name your six figure car). Not a middle manager that barely makes $150k on a good year!

Well a definite way of settling this is to race him... can't argue with that!

haha i know. I hate racing people tho, not worth the dangers of being pulled over...plus lanuching the m3 is damn near impossible with a 6spd. you gotta have perfect conditions or a set of rears on order

I debadge all my cars. My M5 and my 550 were/are debadged. My old 328i and Z4 were debadged as well. I don't care what people think about the car I drive, I just prefer the cleaner look. The badge is just a social status thing.

Same here. It's got nothing to do with trying to make the car look like something it's not, I just like the symmetrical look.

I have the same pet peeve with exhausts. I can't believe BMW is still using single exhaust outlets on a 5 Series!

As someone who has a de-badged 535i with quad-tips... if anyone asks if its a M5, I just say its a tuned 535i.

I like the clean look. I don't get people who like to put on M5 badges, etc... just why... the people who care about M5 actually know whats real and will laugh at you.

And the people who don't care wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 528i and an M5.

come on now... freudian slips are for idiots. i'm a guy of principle and these instances, i was only relating a small anecdote amongst similar minded enthusiasts... You don't know me so I can't just say trust me, but I have zero insecurities around material things. Only by chance of being in the luxury material business at a young age remotely made me even cognizant of these things.

Its the imposition of non-important things to make people feel negatively is a very poor use of one's time.

This is so true! (For people who don't care or don't really know the difference between the models)

True story...Had a 528i loaner that apparently had a nice color combo. I can't remember the interior/exterior colors, but nothing special, not an M Sport, etc. So the wife and I are at our daughters after school program in the parking lot about to leave and we must have been out there 15 minutes as a couple of parents were admiring the car.

I was thinking to myself this is the entry level 5 series loaner. I wonder what they would have done if it was a 550i M Sport or a M5!

Generally speaking an M5 conversion is so expensive that you will rarely see one (and it is pointless because you have a slower version of the real exact looking thing). And to debadge an M5 to make it look like usual car is also so much effort no M5 owner will bother. Quads, brakes, fenders, grilles - all together probably show you what you got in front of you. I do like the look of some of the M5 components - rims and grilles. But even then, Im on the fence about adding those. Just something doesnt feel right though frankly speaking I think its a fair game. Only like 5 people will be able to tell what comes from where, and you are on a BMW forum and even you had to ask. So fair game.

On a side note, OP, if that guy really bothers you so much tell it to his face...
