Moved from F31 330d to F11 530d - Engine note different

Hi all

I've just moved from an F31 330d to F11 530d and noticed that the engine in the new F11 sound much nicer under acceleration than in my F31. It even sounds better just moving about at parking speeds! Sounds more traditionally like a large capacity straight six.

Why is this, exhaust tuning differences or something to do with the sound insulation properties? To be honest I always like the sound in my 330d but it doesn't compare to the same engine type in the F11.

Thoughts

What do you mean by "nicer"? If it's less clatter, perhaps it's more to do with the insulation of the 5, as you've suggested.

I feel the same goes for the 20d engine in the f30 vs the f10.

Is it possible these cars also have audio enhancement?

I'd go one step further and say that of the various examples I driven, a non-trashed and gently driven 2.0d f10 can has less clatter and sounds smoother than a 3.0d f30.

OP, extra refinement in the f10 is partly how BMW justifies it's higher price point as let's face it, it is inherently less sporting due to size and weight.

How have you found the difference in the quality of the materials and look of the interior between f10 & f30?

No, pretty sure only the M550d has audio enhancement of the diesel models.
