Exhaust set-up

Recently my car was in a crash and it has been getting its face fixed for the past 2 weeks. As I have been waiting I thought it would be a good time to buy some goodies so I purchased the double slat gloss black grills with the M stripes (without M5 logo) along with the CF rear spoiler.

Now, I have had my eyes on an exhaust modification for a long time!
I want to product a sweet burble and not something annoying and loud, what would be the best way to go about this if I was to spend no more than $1k? I am trying to not go overboard as I might trade up to the M550xi in about 12 months time.

I will also be getting a rear CF diffuser to mach, and maybe a CF front lip.

If your budget is less than $1k, then I would just get some nice mufflers from Remus or Magnaflow and just weld them with either X or Y pipes. Sound will be pretty nice too.

thats exactly what I am going to do cuz full catback cost over $1500 or so!

Check out my Megan M5 set up in the DIY section. Has videos.

I find it actually fairly quiet now, maybe I'm used to it. There is some drone but the burble is there... even enough to raise the eyebrows of a Chevelle SS driver the other day!

M5 mufflers! Just did it and I'm in love. 535's don't have valve control so I left the valves closed to avoid drone. I removed the resonators and added an x pipe. It's relatively quiet under normal driving conditions but has a great bark/tone when you get on it. Best of all it's OEM and has a great resale value.

M5 or M6 mufflers in my opinion produces the best sound. You can hear music and talk inside the cabin without problem but when you push the pedal to the metal you can hear a nice sound which doesnt drone.

I'd suggest the M Performance exhaust. It can be had for around $1k on ebay new. Many will tell you it's not "loud" enough. But it's loud enough for me, especially considering I have a wife and child. But if you're single or your wife doesn't care if you wake up the neighbors, there are plenty of other systems out there.

Megan M5 Muffler DIY

This was when I built it to fit the M Tech stock diffuser. If you plan on doing the M5 diffuser, let me know and I'll take some measurements and update the DIY. If you do go with the M5 diffuser... I would recommend that because the mufflers will be tucked up better into the bumper and you won't have to butcher the Megan factory hangers, which are built for the M5 diffuser.

I think your only options are used M5 or new Megan. Remus for N55 is closer to $1700.

a downpipe upgrade with secondary cat delete would sound mean with stock exhaust without being too loud. if you wish to leave the downpipe stock, a secondary cat delete with some sort of performance axle-back (etc. remus) is a very good choice. the stock piping/layout is quite good for our cars, no need for a full cat-back.
