550 vs X5M

Looking for ideas, opinions and suggestions.

Currently have a 2012 X5M and potentially thinking of swapping it for a 2015 550 xdrive. Not sure if it's the right move and if I will regret it or be happy with it. Anyone with experience with both?

Background; had a E92 M3 prior to the X5M and liked it (not as much as my C63 AMG tho). Got the X5M for practical/fun aspect. Have done couple mods, lowered it etc. The direction I have in mind will look good as it's Monte Carlo Blue. However, while lowering as improved it can't help miss the sporty car feeling plus I guess it's my general car ADD kicking in.

For some reason C63 was the only car I kept the longest (almost 2 years), M3 (9 months), X5M (5 months so far). Ideally, would like a car that I wouldn't wanna switch for at least 2 years.

SUV vs Luxury Sedan
M vs Non-M
Older Tech vs Newer Tech
edit: forgot you were considering a 2015 550, not G30

To me the biggest question to answer is do you want an SUV or a Luxury Sedan?

They're both ridiculously fast. I suspect the X5M is going to have a stiffer ride it has DCT which you wont get in 550

Stick with the X5M and get a tune.

I don't really know I guess. I don't NEED a SUV or a luxury sedan for that matter. I could even do with a 2 door sports car at the moment. But I do see your point.

I guess what I am confused about is if the 550 will be better driving and closer to a sports car feeling than the X5M or not I guess.

As for speed, I don't mind how fast the X5M is as is so not sure if tune is something I want.

I think it more boils down to my stupid car ADD that I can't seem to stick to one thing.

Newer tech would be nice but not sure if I am willing to pay the price of the M badge for it. M5 would be a no brainer if it wasn't RWD.

Considering the 550 is a large HEAVY sedan, I would certainly not call it sporty by any means. I've never driven the X5M, but I would say it probably is as good or would out handle the 550 given the X5M has M suspension components and tuning.

The 550 excels at being a luxury sedan with a very powerful addictive engine that makes a great highway cruiser. As a sports car, not so much.

It does sound like it is just your ADD kicking in and the desire for something different. Fortunately I don't suffer from that. I tend to mod my cars slowly and the new mod every few months is enough to keep me content with my cars. If I were you I would stick with the X5M. The only substitute for an M car, is another M car.

Sure sounds like it.
That said, why not just go with the one that kept it in check the longest, C63 ?

550 is great, but based on the fact you loved C63 and M3, not sure it's the best choice for you.

Thanks for your input guys, you are absolutely right.

After much more reflection, it appears that it is the ADD kicking in again.

Which is what happened after 2 years of C63, 9 months of M3 and now already for the X5M.

I looked into C63's again but I am not a fan of the new one (except for coupe) but I am trying to avoid RWD if possible.

I think my plan is to (if I can stick to it) keep the X5M for another year and half until the warranty runs out and then trade it for a E63 AMG or something.

Let's see I guess. I am worried if I go with the 550 I will be in the same boat after a few months of ownership and will want to switch.

I am modding the X5M slowly, as I did all my other cars including Dinan exhaust, cf intake, tune on the M3 but that wears off quickly. lol

Perhaps I will keep doing some minor mods on the X5M to try to keep it interesting.

If you're in a E63 mindset, you're beyond the "practical" compromise of a performance SUV. Maybe M5? Although E63 wagon is Badass!

Although if I were looking at new E63 money, I'd probably do a CPO 991 4S and a preowned X5 3.5i for the practicality bit.

BUT, yes if you are looking at E63, 550i I guarantee will not scratch that itch.

M5 would be awesome and actually had one in mind but I would like to avoid RWD if possible. E63 the new ones are 4Matic I believe so that is the reason. That being said, I am not a fan of big hunky vehicles so I may not go that route anyway. But if I can get used to the X5M weight I am sure I can get used to the E63 as well.

The main reason for thinking E63 is the fact that C63 kept me interested the longest. So E63 seems like a reasonable alternative. They are supposed to have a coupe version at some point I think and that would be extremely hard to resist if it's awd.

Could be your "car ADD" again, but you're contradicting yourself a bit in what you "think" you want.

C63 kept you happy the longest, but you don't want RWD. You also don't want big hunky vehicle, but would consider E63, which I honestly don't know much about, other than the fact that it is big hunky vehicle.

Either way, those are good problems to have, I'm sure you'll eventually find something you can stick with for a while. Based on my understanding of your comments, sounds to me like M2/3/4, C63 or (fine, you don't want RWD, thought I personally think that's a mistake ) RS4 are due for a test drive.
