Extended Air Con - 520d

Just noticed on the brochure that extended air con features are an option on the 518/520.
What are the extended features? Will I miss them by not having them?
What are other 520 owners thoughts?

I can help out here - I ordered them on my 520d.

Basically, it's an extension of the dual zone air conditioning and you get the following 'extras' with it:

Fully automatic temperature control with independent temperature control, air distribution and air volume control for drive and front passenger. Two vents in the rear console. Including Automatic Air Recirculation (AUC), solar sensor and fogging sensor and auxiliary ventilation.

I ordered it as I'd like the auxiliary ventilation (can set a time for it to come on) and the parked residual heat function. The fogging sensor will come in handy, although to be honest, it's not like pressing a button to do it manually is that much hassle!

I consciously didn't order it on my 520d as 90% of the time it's just me in the car and I didn't see the need for the rear vents and having clocked up just over 3,000 miles in mine, I can honestly say that I find the 'standard' equipment to be more than adequate for my needs

Pretty much all of that is in the basic setup, I use the auxiliary frequently (and switch it on from my iPhone) and I don't have the extended setup.

The extended setup allows different distribution and flow (driver/passenger) and Automatic Air Recirculation.

The other stuff, dual temp, aux vent, rest (residual heat), solar and fogging sensors are standard.

FFS - the dealer specifically told me that the above *wasn't* included unless I specced the extended setup

So to confirm, you have a blanked switch at the top corners of the air con panel and no vents in the back?

Just to check - are you running an LCI 520d? - just in case they dropped it for the LCI...

Phew, I feel a bit better now.
I thought it was important, clearly it's not essential. Like you Beancounter_74, it will be mainly be me in the car.

I agree, did'nt have it in my E60 and have'nt missed it in my F10. Even when we are out as a family at the weekends, the standard kit is well upto the job, more than any other car I have enjoyed in fact.

So, as part of the standard kit you can turn on the heating in the car via remote apps?

Well you can in mine - I don't have the enhanced set-up, as I say, but I do have vents in the back. The only thing I can't do is vary the airflow side-to-side, just the temperature. Mines a April 2013 car so one of the very last ones before LCI.

Perhaps they've dropped some of the functions from the basic on the LCI model.

I think they did make a change at the LCI. I also believe that the 520d has a different set up from the 525d+ cars.

I've got the brochure somewhere, I'll try and take a look.

That was always the case - the models above the 520 had extended A/C as standard. However, it seems that post LCI the basic system has had more functions removed. Pre LCI the standard and extended systems were much closer in functionality.

I must admit, it's very hard to find info on this - especially the differences between the two!

^^^ You're right, I've just looked through the pdf brochures I have and although it references 'extended features' it doesn't clarify what exactly they are.

As I said, I find the standard air-con that I have in my 520d to be more than adequate and far better than the 'advanced' system I had in my RRSport.

It's nice to be able to control airflow side-to-side though. My wife likes hot air blowing into the footwell and I don't.

I think mine does that, not 100% sure, certainly different temps each side, so how they do that without seperate blowers? I have only one blower gauge ( the red steps above the buttons) so a little unsure too!

Maybe some photos are required, if people who have and don't have the extended features could post them, we could compare.

They all have that - it just changes the hot/cold blending flaps from side to side but you get the same airflow (hence only one blower gauge) and the same direction. With the enhanced set-up you can have (say) passenger to feet on high, driver to mid-level on low, etc.

Right, I think I can differentiate one of the differences.
This would appear to be the extended (you can change the temp in the vents in middle of the dash for the passenger/driver.

On mine (non extended air con) there is only the ability to adjust the vent, not either side. Bit difficult to see, but I'll get a better snap over the weekend.

The main difference is the display. Extended has two blower gauges, two direction settings and "AUTO" on the round temperature adjust buttons.

I don't think the issue is identifying the two, it's what the basic version lacks. It seems pre-LCI had more features in the standard.
