I miss the sheer outright power of the 6-cyl engine and the growling noise it made. But in general daily commute and use, I find the 520d is fine. I have also driven to France (Dijon) with a car full of family and 'stuff' and it was great there.

What I must point out is how much more frisky it is when you change the performance control switch to 'sport'. The engine is much more responsive! This is the mode I use if I'm, erm, in a hurry....

Conversely Eco-pro mode turns it into an old Volvo 264 estate with a non-responsive, heavy, accelerator...

I run my 520d sports auto exclusively on the Shell V Power Diesel ... can squeeze a few extra HP out of it that way too.

After driving 90k miles in my last 2011 520d M sport company car, once it hit three years old it was time to change. With a list price budget of £47k, I had a choice of having another 520d with a huge list of optional toys, or go for a bigger engine with no toys. For me the choice was simple, as I find the power of the 520d more than adequate and prefer playing with my HUD, MFD, surround view, LED lights, TV and DVD player...and the BIK saving is welcome too.

I do think the HUD is one of the best features of the car. a Simple concept that just works. I wouldn't like to have a car now without one.

My wish list for the HUD would be to add the entertainment list (can be coded - I think my car needs a later software level for that) and the speed limiter, wish when you set that it appeared on the HUD.

+1 for the HUD. I always use it (except when wearing polarised sunglasses).

With regards to the power of the 520D, it is all relative and depends on what you are used to. However after only 5 months in my new 520D, I've just accrued my first three-pointer driving offence on a dual carriageway. Good job I didn't have the 530D as I may have been looking at a driving ban.....

I agree, the 520d is really impressive, I was amazed at how good it was when we had the F11, I wish I had not swapped for the E350cdi, stupid move.

I have been looking at F11s again, and this may sound stupid, but I think I will either go for a 535i or a 520d.

The 535i would be my only car, where as a 13 plate for £25k would be my family wagon and then I would get someone else as well. I have a 2.8i Z3 that I adore, but maybe something a bit bigger.
