How can I tell if I can upload music via usb??
Hi all, new BMW F10 owner, owned a '59' 3 Series before. My F10 is a '60' reg and I have sat nav and a USB port in the glovebox. However when putting a USB memory stick into the port nothing is recognised on idrive. I am wondering if all F10's have that capability to store music on a hard drive or if its an optional extra that my car doesn't have?
Thanks in advance, Dan |

Thanks for that, I am at a loss then. I don't have enhanced bluetooth just standard!
Is it true that if I purchase the media snap adapter that I can play music via that? If that is correct can you control the iPhone through idrive? I have a 3.5mm aux cable but not mad keen on the sound quality and the fact that you can't control the iPhone!!! cheers |

Do you have a USB port under the centre console armrest? In mine the USB in the glovebox is for updates only and no external media devices are recognised. The centre glovebox where I plug my iPhone and have full control of the music app via idrive. There is also some control of other apps, Spotify and TuneIn Radio, but they have to be launched before they can be controlled via the idrive/MFSW.

No mate, just the AUX point in the centre armrest! I think I am going to have to get a media snap adapter, just need to know if you can control the iPhone with the stereo with a media snap adapter.

Unfortunately the media snap-in won't give you access to stream music. There are certain criteria your car needs to meet. To the best of my knowledge you need USB in the centre armrest and professional NAV. Correct me if I'm wrong.. It's very annoying because I have professional NAV with the hard disk but do not have the USB in the centre armrest, I can however upload music via USB in the glovebox, very annoying I cannot stream though.

Your system seems quite different from mine then. I'm not sure if the media cradle will add any functionality to the system. It's crazy that something like a 5 series doesn't offer anything better than AUX-In.
Your only option may be to retrofit an iPod connector, I had one in my 07 MINI. The part uses the cd-changer port, which I assume the F10 has. This connector have excellent sound and full control via iDrive (or MINI joystick, as it is known). Might be worth asking your dealer. |

You can't code in a hard drive.
But do you have bluetooth? It MAY be possible to code in audio streaming, but gspannu will know more about what you can do. When I had my e91 it didn't have usb in centre console either. £1000 or there about to retrofit... |

You need to have either Enhanced Bluetooth or Professional SatNav Media to have Audio Streaming via bluetooth... and as someone has already pointed out, the hard drive cannot be coded - this is a case of missing hardware. I have seen forum posts about retrofitting (privately, not via dealers); but I guess it is an expensive option; and not really sure if it actually works. Retrofitting seems to be a lot more popular in US than here...

Were you told it had it then? Trouble is, some of the salesmen know every option and how it works, others know zip and will tell you what you need to know if it sells the car

If it helps :
I spec'd my F10 520d M Sport saloon from scratch - 60 reg. October 2010 build. The USB music interface was a paid for option at the time (shortly thereafter ... early 2011, it became standard ... albeit with a price hike too) : USB interface 6FL £205.00 I have no nav. system at all. The USB port is in the centre console. Have you checked the VIN for option 6FL? What size USB stick are you using? Have you tried >1 USB stick? Cheers |
