Drivetrain malfunction?

Car popped up with a "drivetrain malfunction" this afternoon. I stopped almost immediately as it started shaking like it had Parkinson's. Message advised me to "drive moderately" but not actually to stop.

I was about three hours from home. Instead of having it towed to the local dealer I'm having it trucked home to my dealer. Figure that's easier and likely cheaper than getting a rental and having to come back to pick it up.

Anyone got a guess what's wrong-- it's a 2012 550xi with about 14,000 miles? Any suggestions on how I get BMW to pay the $700 towing charge?

---------

Update 5/2/13 -- I picked up the car yesterday from the dealership (Baron BMW). They replaced the fuel injectors as one had 'gone bad.' I'm told I could have driven home (~200 miles) on it but it would have been a bumpy, smelly ride.

----------

Update 5/26/13 -- Received a check this past week from BMW for the full cost of the tow ($700). Pleasantly surprised, I wrote a letter to the company that runs the roadside assistance program detailing the problem and why I had it towed ~200 miles instead of letting them take it 20 miles to the closest BMW dealer. They responded with the check in about ten days. Again, pleasantly surprised. Having a breakdown was a pain but BMW gets credit for making the recovery and reimbursement phases fairly painless.

Had to replace the entire vacuum hose package. There are quite a few threads on this.

Doesn't BMW have roadside assistance for the towing?

Yes, BMW has roadside assistance for towing...but in my case it was less than useless.

BMW wanted to tow it to a dealer that was 20 miles away but that would have been 200 miles away from my house. I would have had to get a rental car (on a Sunday), drive home the 200 miles, and then a few days later drive back to recover my car and then drive home again.

Didn't seem like a good idea to burn another day on this problem. Now I just have to hope that BMW sees it my way and reimburses me for the towing charge.
