Two new engines in 18 months

In Dec 2015, my 2011 550i blew a rod at 95,000 miles and needed a new engine. In July 2016, I traded it for a CPO 2013 535 msport.

Three weeks ago my son was driving the 535i and went through some standing water after 5 days of rain. Engine hydro-locked, and needed a new engine. This time insurance paid.

Must be some kind of record !

Driving through a large amount of water and hydro-locking an engine counts as user error rather than an indication of possible unreliability of BMW engines.

Agreed - user error. But the water was only ankle deep (4-5 inches). The car's air intake is very low down.

335i got new motor from dealer damage (broke a mount off).
550i got new motor (used) from bearing failure.
Would have to look at paperwork on 335i, but both were within a year, closer to 6 months...
Sigh...

My 550i is in for a new motor for rod bearing failure... at 44k! 44k of well maintained miles too... it's still under the extended maintenance plan and has a CPO warranty. My next 5-series will be an N63tu, or maybe a G30 when prices go down.

The only way the water got into the intake is because the car was driven through the water too fast.

Lack of common sense screwed the engine.

I have had 2 535i, both 2013, on both slapped JB4 2 with downpipe since 1k miles. First one I totaled at 28k, daily driven and always redlined it once or twice a day, never had any issue. A side road next to my house accumulates about 4-5" of water during heavy rain and I always do hydroplane style driving, never got a single problem. On 2nd 535i, I do the same, it has 24k miles, still never issues. I mean not a single damn code of "drivetrain malfunction" or misfire or this and that! But I always use Mobile 1 0W40 .
