got the M550d as a loaner for a couple days
Last week my 535d was at the dealership for some new (summer) rubber. I got to take an M550d x-drive (F11) as a loaner for a couple days.
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the uerdiesel. I mean, if you wanna get a real M, get an M5. Plus the 535d seems like all the diesel one needs. However, the M550 makes sense to me now. I was surprised to see she is much faster than the 535d. I was expecting a 530d-535d kind of difference. The engine also sounds fantastic for a diesel. I'm pretty sure that in real life conditions the M550d can keep up with any M3/M5, she is just so effortlessly fast. The great thing is the fuel consumption, the car averaged just 7,2 l./100 kms even though I did some serious driving. Any downsides? Well, the steering was terrible, very unprecise. And personally I don't like the Audi style mirror caps. So, would I ever buy one? No because I'm gonna trade my 535d for a real M car (M5 or M4). But if you're looking for the ultimate family car (touring, x-drive, great mpg, waves of torque), I'd say look no further. Sorry I forgot to take pics but I found a shot of a similar car at www.autogespot.nl By the way, in my country the list prices are: F10 535d € 69.500 F10 M550d X-drive € 102.500 M5 € 128.000

I will drive them soon to see what will be the successor of my F10 535i M/6. I don't need x-drive so if the steering is a lot worse I will absolutely choose the 535d. The 530d (f11) came with active front steering; a huge improvement in the steering compared to my previous 535i with only m-sport suspension.
I have driven the M5 for a weekend; great car but way to quick for our little country. Kills your driving license for sure.

Yeah, I'm wondering what was wrong with the steering. Could be I'm used to the active steering in my own car.

I wouldn't mind testdriving one myself.

I had considered the M550d Xdrive but firstly, I would have had to wait much longer for it (the car I bought arrived in stock the day I was in the showroom and had more-or-less the spec I wanted!) and secondly, my wife already has a 530XD (E61) which we drive regularly and it already has plenty of power for lugging things around (on the autobahn last year, we held on to 230km/h for long stretches with little effort or fuss). Finally, I would need to add another 30K (CHF) (not much different from 30K US$) on top of my 530 to get the M550 - just didn't see it was worth that much more. Another thing for me is that I genuinely prefer the torque curve of a diesel engine. I've owned an M5 before and have just sold on my 911; the 3Ltr Diesel just pulls better where I need it to without all of the screaming and razmatazz at 7 or 8,000rpm. Probably many will disagree (and that's fine ) but now that I'm old and decrepit and having had quite a car history already, that's where I'm at... |

My retired M3 e92 was very exciting. But it takes a lot of hard work and high revs to go fast. It can be really exhausting as a daily driver.

Got a testdrive booked for the 15th; on the 18th a 535d. Hopefully the new price list of the LCI will be published early June so I can order mine...
