I picked my car up a couple of days ago and have been busy so far figuring out all the electronics. This is really an amazing vehicle. USB integration works consistently and my iPhone was very easy to pair and works perfectly with the Bluetooth. Just added it in and started making calls. I love the voice recognition system - it works very well - very impressive. I'm getting the hang of the iDrive - it seems well designed and intuitive. My first impressions of the car are very positive but I am taking it pretty easy this early in the break in period. Needless to say, I was very sensitive to some of the things that have received a lot of attention on this and other forums. The Comfort Access seems to work as advertised; just walk up to the car and open the door with no fuss. Touching the little ridged spot on the handle locks the doors as expected. The car doesn't shake on a cold start. Smooth and quiet - as expected. Regarding the steering, I have to say I'm ok with that so far as well. I've driven on expressways and winding country roads and everything in between. No issues with on center wandering or pulling to the right. The car just goes where I point it - very much so. The car handles very well and is a pleasure to drive. I think the steering is a little lighter than my E39 but I can't be sure; doesn't matter. So far so good with the tires. I'm trying to avoid potholes and rough spots in the road but I will eventually hit one so we'll see how it goes. The ride is quiet - no tire road noise or vibrations or the like. As for throttle tip in and jerking, I do notice a bit of that but I'm not sure if I would have if I hadn't been looking for it. I also notice a bit of lurching on slow braking. Is that the regenerative braking at work? The car does have a lot of gears to get through from a start but that seems pretty seamless to me. Sport mode works as it did in my E39 and seems to eliminate much of the throttle hesitancy off the line. It doesn't seem to affect the steering. I don't have the Dynamic Handling Package so I can't compare the various modes but this car feels well planted on the road and is very comfortable. I've played with the Nav system and I'm liking it. The display is very clear and it's seems to know about all the roads around here including some fairly obscure side roads. Issues may surface as I start to actually use the thing to help me get somewhere. I haven't done that yet. As you can see from the pictures below, my car has the black panel display which is very cool. I'm very pleased with the appearance of this car. Cashmere Silver is not a common choice but I love it. I've had many compliments on it already from neighbors.

Nice looking interior. I like the lighter wood with the black interior. Nice contrast.

Based on what the gauges are saying in my experience, I'd say the lurching doesn't have to do with the regen braking. As far as I know the "regenerative braking" is only active in the form of engine braking. That is, it kicks in when your foot is off the accelerator. Not really when your foot is on the brake pedal.

Look at your engine efficiency gauge. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the gauge will move to the "Efficient Dynamics" area. At that point, the alternator will be tied to the engine and will send energy back to the battery.

Any lurching while braking has to do with flaws in the brakes.

A beauty.. like the unique color combos

If its a side-to-side noiseless kind of juddering, i think its just the soft suspension at work. Try it on an upslope, if its less, cause less weight on the front end when you brake..

I was out this afternoon and paid more attention to the lurching on slowdown. It's not related to the brakes. I notice it as the car is slowing to a stop with no throttle but without the brakes. Maybe it's just downshifting? Or perhaps the engine extra load as the alternator engages. I do notice the Efficient Dynamics gauge active during this period. Not a big deal. I'll see what happens as I drive more. I don't think there's anything wrong.

The car slowing down when you take your foot off the accelerator is just the way BMW tunes the car to behave. My auto-tranny 335i acted the same way. The car doesn't really coast. It's the same behavior as if you were to drive a manual tranny car. The car would act that way if the Efficient Dynamics were there or not. Basically, the auto tranny stays locked as much as possible. That way you don't get that "mushy" feeling when you hit the accelerator again.

Ah, that makes sense. It helps knowing what it is. Your comparison to a manual is well-taken. My Corvette does the same thing (much worse) as the revs drop approaching a stop but I don't question it as I know exactly what's happening. Is this a recent thing with BMW automatics? My 2001 E39 did not do that, at least not that I recall, and I drove the thing well over 200,000 Km.

I saw another one a week or so ago in the countryside north of Oakville. Was that you?

Yeah, the ZF transmissions act this way. They were added in the E60 model timeframe. The previous 6 speed did, and now the current 8 speed does.
