Has Anyone Opened Up A Stock 550i Muffler?

As the title says, has anyone opened up a 550 muffler to see what's inside? When I had my Z06 Corvette, there were a few guys on the forum that took the stock mufflers and removed the packing and cut open one of the pipes passing through one of the chambers. It gave the car a more pronounced sound without the drone. The Z06 mufflers have the same kind of bypass valve that the 550 mufflers do.

If I can find a set of 550i mufflers cheap I'll experiment and post the results.

Many people have opened up the E9x M3 cans and just wrapped the perforated holes or welded in straight pipe and it works pretty well.
Good luck with this project.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I think this is what aus is talking about
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=609950

Someone take one for the team and give him the mufflers cheap so he can open it up and experiment

Here's a pic of a 335i muffler.

I think the perforated pipes are connecting the two mufflers together, so that would be missing from 550 muffler. You could definitely stright pipe the internal resonator.

Maybe looks like this?

Another poster opened up his 2007 Z4 M coupe muffler...I suspect the F10 550i muffler looks anything like this. Lots of work, for sure, but interesting project. Let us know how it goes...good luck
