F10/F11 Aircon Compressor

Has anyone on here had issues with their aircon not working? Mines packed in (Dec13 car) and have been informed that it's the compressor which is on back order with an unknown lead time.

It would appear that this is a common issue http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/98474-air-con-woes/

How long have people on here waited for their replacement?

I suspect that with the cooler weather over winter it's just a case that people haven't noticed that their air con has packed in. Probably a surge in demand as the spring weather kicks in. Hoping I won't be waiting to long.

Yeah mines been on all so winter but because of the cold weather I hadn't realised that it was broken.

They really should be looking to do a recall.

Yeah i had the problem! I was advised it would take 8 or so weeks so BMW UK gave me a courtesy car for free! After that it took 3 weeks for the part to arrive, it might have to do something with the fact they were paying £90 per day on the rental!

Are you guys all having problems with the compressor because it's the condenser which most folks have had problems with. There were numerous posts on this from February 2014 and I discovered mine wasn't working recently. Williams Bolton have confirmed it's a faulty condenser but can't provide a delivery date. BMW UK have advised me that my part will be "prioritised" but have failed to give a date. Been scorching and sweaty in the car this week. Mine is an August 12 build.

Apologies for the error in the title, you are correct it should indeed read condenser and not compressor.

Worryingly I've been reading that some people have been denied warranty claims by BMW saying the part has suffered from stone damage. Mine should be covered by warranty so I'm hoping that they don't try the stone damage tact with me. Clearly if a significant number are being replaced because of stone damage that that in itself is a design issue. They should have chosen a more robust unit or placed a mesh grille in front of it to afford protection or both.

I read this also and, yes - a bit anal I know - I took photos and a video of the pristine looking condenser located behind the electronically controlled flaps behind the grill. These flaps will open automatically if you pull the large plug to the left of the radiator and then start the engine. Don't forget to reconnect.

All cars have the condenser located in this position including much lower marque cars. This has to be a design fault.

BMW UK were offering free courtesy cars for the length of time of the repair (and wait) so I would ask your dealership or (if that fails) BMW UK for a replacement car. You will get another BMW for a few weeks or months depending on how long it takes for the part to come. Once they start paying for the rental, BMW UK will prioritise the part for you- at least that is what I've seen!

Update - I received a call from Williams Bolton first thing morning to say the condenser had arrived and they can fit as soon as I can get the car into their workshop. I'm away this weekend so its booked in next Thursday.

Hopefully you guys get a similar speedy fix.

How long have you been waiting? Also, have you Bern using a hire car? I suspect that may well influence the priority you are given for receiving a replacement.

Diagnosis was carried out on 10th April. I didn't make too much of a fuss at the time. I emailed BMW Customer services a week later, received a reply Monday this week (indicating that I had been prioritised) culminating in the phone call from Williams yesterday.

Not been on here a while but this is an interesting read. I got my BMW during the winter months (Dec '13) but over summer last year I thought how poor the aircon was compared to my E90. Pretty much had to have it on its lowest setting and full blast on occasion. It does get cooler, just doesn't seem to hold a temp so have to keep fiddling with it.

I was going to leave it until its first service to get it checked but I'll bet I've got this issue so best get it in.

In addition to the poor cooling I also notice it mists up a bit in colder weather which I doubt it should be doing either.

Update: Just booked it in for next week, dealer confirmed they've got two week parts back order for the aircon issue. Said it wasn't a recall but a known problem etc. Not impressed I've had a car for 18 months with potentially duff aircon fitted.

Had same problem. Misty windows and warm air. Took it into local dealer. Broken condenser. Replaced same day FOC - this was a couple of weeks ago. But they did make it sound as they were doing me a favour doing it FOC 😊

Mins going in tomorrow to be checked. Only got the car a week ago and noticed the day I picked it up that it wasn't working.

Hoping it will get fixed tomorrow too but I'm not holding my breath!

Mine broke a few months ago. Took it to the dealer and initially they said it was because of stone damage. However, they did agree to fix under warranty.

When they fix this does it fix it for good ? As I'm concerned with my warranty ending later this year.

Mine went in yesterday and they changed it straight away. I was told that they are redesigned and shouldn't be an issue. Will wait and see though!

What are the symptoms of a failing condenser? mine blows air its just not cold anymore?

Does this mean mine has failed or does it need topping up?

Symptoms are warm air instead of cold and window misting
