Spare Key from Factory?

Wonder if anyone had a similar issue that I'm going through right now. I recently picked up a 535i from the BMW dealership about 3-4 weeks ago. I only have one key so far and the sales guy who sold me the car said that he had been "trying" to look for the spare but had no luck. So last Monday, he finally said he was going to order it from factory and it would take a while. Does a spare key actually need to be ordered from factory (my guess is that when he said factory that it's being ordered from Germany) and how long does it usually take for a spare key to be ordered? A week later and no update from him. Pretty pissed right now that it has taken this long and not sure how they lost the key to begin with?

I bought a spare for my E60 through the dealer a couple of years ago. It was fairly cheap, came out of Tennessee and arrived in a couple of days.

Ouch. Lexus charges $300 for the key. My wife lost my spare but I ended up just getting one for $70 online.

However, I'm talking about a new BMW with no spare key? Odd. Guess I'll just wait a month then.

Thats normal. I bought mine as a CPO and i think they're supposed to provide buyers with two keys. Same thing happened, salesman had to 'look for it' and sure enough about 2months later they mailed me a new key.

Garage List
Keys typically take 10-15 days. Ever since the introduction of EWS, which has advanced to CAS, BMW pre makes 10 keys for each vehicle. When you request a new key, it's dug out of storage and shipped to your dealer. No new keys are cut.

Bought a E60 CPO and one of the keys was missing the valet key and then about 10 days later I received a whole in the mail from my dealer. I guess it depends on how much pull your dealer has with BMW NA.

So far it has been two weeks. I may contact him for a follow-up next week if he doesn't contact me.

Dealer ordered keyfob from factory is so they can cut the emergency key. Once keyfob arrives, programming to car is relatively simple and doesn't typically require special tools (provided you have a working keyfob to start car).

BMW offers "quick" methods to obtain keyfobs. Time to bug your dealer if this bothers you.

If you ended up losing one, it's easy to just buy one online and have them program it for you. In my case though, I'm waiting on one that was lost by the dealer. (Not sure how this happens) Owned 5 cars in the past and no problem whatsoever. BMW
