Understanding diesel vs petrol torque at wheels

Why is that a 530d can feel more torquey than a 550i during city driving on an automatic transmission?

The tranmissions are the same, the gear ratios are the same, the final gear ratio is slightly different.

However if you calculate torque at wheels for both, 550i has more torque at wheels in the given (same) gear, yet doesn't feel as torquey during driving.

Is it because the diesel is actually NOT in the same gear, but a lower gear?

E.g. gear 5 on diesel at 1500rpm 50mph (1778 Nm at the wheels)
gear 7 on petrol at 1500 rpm 50pmh (1486 Nm at the wheels)

And therefore diesel doesn't have to downshift, doesn't have to rev up, and has more torque at wheels in a given situation instantly?

Or what is actually the reason?
