Question for you guys.... are the muffler hanger position the same between the M5 and 550? From what i gather they are and if someone got a full M5 exhaust it should bolt up to all the same hanger positions on the car right?

I am doing this swap on Saturday and already have the M5 diffuser ready for the RPI M5 mufflers.

Yep the hangers are in the same spot. It's a pretty straightforward install. hardest part is the diffuser and even that's not too bad.

It's that simple

Connect to stock downpipe?

Question to those that did the full M5 exhaust... Does the M5's 3" head pipe flange bolt directly to the 550i down pipe flange or do we need some type of interface?
Thanks

Others will chime in but my understanding is some form of connection piece needs to be fabricated. Lancaster also indicated to me that it may require additional work on the tips perhaps to lengthen them a bit. Since I am getting a full exhaust, I too and trying to figure out whether it will be simpler to do the whole exhaust or just the mufflers.

When I did mine, we had to unbolt and turn the drivers bracket 180 to get it to line up right. I've never seen anyone else mention this, so maybe my car was odd. If the drivers side isn't lining up the M5 diffuser opening, it's a 60 second fix.

Complete system vs Mufflers only

Opps...I may have started some confusion with my question.
Actually, I meant the flange at the head pipe (circled in top pic) that connects to the down pipe from the engine cats. This would apply if were swapping out the whole 550i system for the whole M5/M6 system. Does it bolt right up to the 550i downpipe coming right after the primary cats?

On the other hand, if we're talking about only replacing the 550i muffler with an M5/M6 muffler, then I know that a "connection" consisting of a custom bent 3" connector pipe is all that would be needed (last pic).

I did the mufflers a few weeks ago and may be doing the rest of the 3"piping soon but just wanted to make sure there's no problem at the flange).
Thanks

Just ordered the exhaust meister to remotely control my vacuum flaps using the included remote control or garage door opener.

More to come on pics, install and review. But this is the ultimate solution to open the flaps at will.

Let me know if this thing works for you ... it did absolutely NOTHING for me. I had the M5 muffler installed on my stock 550xi a few months back ... bought the exhaust meister and installed ... could hear the electronics clicking ... but absolutely NO difference in sound!!

I'd also like to know if the M5 complete exhaust bolts up to the downpipes of the stock 2014 550... Can anyone advise?

If Exhaust Meister works...

For those of us that have the OEM M5/M6 mufflers installed WITH the vacuum flap left operational, the 'Exhaust Meister' would be great! A sort of "sound-on-demand' feature.

As I understand it, the factory system opens the vacuum flap on start up and then closes it about 30 seconds later, hence the reduction in sound (check my sound clip...my 550i with just the M5/M6 mufflers). It remains that way through part throttle driving to reduce sound and drone. But on WOT, the flap is open for the maximum flow and sound (at least how the factory designed how the sound should sound) from the exhaust.

So, the expectation with the Exhaust Meister would be that if you select to disable the vacuum flap, you should expect to hear the louder sound from the exhaust, just like it does on start up, through out the RPM range. Except for WOT, which is a different sound anyway.

And if this works, then the control on drone is indeed in the OEM M5 mufflers and the flaps. For outrageous sound, one might even run straight 3" pipes all the way from down pipes to the M5 mufflers and control the sound just with the vacuum flap via the Exhaust Meister?

Am I on the right track?

Can't wait to hear Scott's experience

My car is noticably louder and deeper w/ the flaps open.

The exhaust meister works if... when you press the open button, it opens the flaps and leave them open until you press the close button or turn off the car.

If it does that, it works. If not, I'll return it.

Opening the flaps on a stock car does next to nothing. I have M5 mufflers, and an x-pipe in place of the stock center muffler.

FYI, those RF remotes won't program with 2013+ homelinks. They use some different frequency.

We use the same remotes on flip out plates, and were never able to program the remotes to the factory homelink since the 2013 models.

Flaps did NOT open on my '14 550xi w/ M5 Mufflers with the Exhaust Meister ... therefore returned ... just wondering if it was only me ... or if anyone else with LCI 550 had the same issue.

Just a quick update. Finally got my M5 exhaust on my 550xi. I stuck with the Msport diffuser.

All I can say is WOW what a difference. I purchased an entire M5 exhaust system but I had the shop limit the work to replacing the mufflers and replacing the center muffler with the M5 xpipe. I was going to start with mufflers only but it is such a PIA to be without a car that I decided to just go for it.

This mod totally changes the car. It sounds lie a V8 beast and not a Buick sedan. I drove the car home about 20 miles. I did not notice any drone in the cabin. I DID hear the exhaust at cruising speeds but just barely. In short, my fears of excessive drone while cruising were unfounded. Now, WOT is a different story. The exhaust is loud at WOT. Car sounds mean.

Thanks to Lancaster and others for the exhaust and the advice. I highly recommend this mod to anyone looking to improve sound without breaking the bank.
