Tinting the front windshield...anyone had this done? Any disadvantages?
Question:
1. Does tinting the front windshield has any negative effect on the HUD performance? 2. Anyone tint the front windshield? 3. Any disadvantages? The front windshield has a very large area so I thought that if you also do the tinting of this area would help the car become even cooler.

Illegal below the AS-1 line. As per the state of Texas, "1.Sunscreening devices must be applied above the AS-1 line..."
People still do it, yet it's unsafe at night and stupid. |

It's illegal but a lot of cars do it here in California.
I tinted my car all around with 57% tint. I don't have HUD so I can't answer that question. With over 300 days of sunshine here in California I think it's a must. Luigimaster did the same but I think he might have went darker. Here's a link to out cars for you to see the difference. 78mao did not tint his windshield http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=454691 |

It is actually very dangerous at night. No matter how sunny it is during daytime, night is always dark and tint will severely impair your vision of less bright objects, such as pedestrians, etc.
There is a reason it is outlawed. |

If it is illegal and post a danger like you guys have stated, then I guess I will not do it. Thanks for the info.

San Diego Tint in Sorrento Valley offers a 70-80% ceramic tint that supposedly blocks 40-50% percent of heat. That might not be too dark. I haven't personally tried it yet. I might try it on my M3.
Yes, it's illegal, but so is the 35% tint I have in my front side windows on the 535i. They offer this product. |

Well, it's not going to eliminate the heat in your car. But it may help at least a little.
I got the Premium Package which includes the sun shades in the rear of the car. Those definitely help reduce the amount of heat in the car as well. |

I'm in Florida. I just had my windows tinted on my new 550i. The installer urged me to not tint the front windshield for two reasons: 1) not legal and 2) hugh potential liability if night accident with front window tinted. He said he would take my money anyway, but I declined. I see lots of cars tinted in the front anyway but imho not worth the risk. God forbid you have a serious accident at night. I do agree the rear sunshade helps a lot.

I think people are saying there's an issue with the windshield. What I think that means is that it is a good idea to be able to see in the general direction that the car is moving.
