Turbo let go
9300 miles on the car and a turbo popped.
Was on the highway going about 65, went to pass someone and hit the gas; a biblical amount of white smoke poured out the back of the car and obscured all 4 lanes behind me. I limped the car back to the dealer later in the day and when not under heavy load or boost it sounds fine. But, it's noticeably down on power and made a funny noise when the shop Foreman rode with me to confirm the issue. Odd thing about it? Not a single warning notice or check engine light on the car (and this damn car has a notice for everything). Hoping it takes less than 2 weeks and it will perform like it used to. Anyone else experience this? I'm shocked it happened on a car with so few miles. |

"Popped"? As in, you heard it blow up?

Sorry to hear it! Did you have any modifications or was the car stock?

Other than replacing the stock mufflers (only the 2 rear cans) the car is stock.
I didn't hear the turbo actually "pop" but it's way down on power and when we tried to replicate the problem at the dealer, you could hear crunching/rattling noises from under the hood, plus more smoke. As far as how I drive; well, I'm not a grandma, but I certainly don't abuse the car. I don't think I've even brought it to 7000rpm yet, though I do enjoy gassing it from time to time. Either way, it shouldn't have happened and once the tear-down is complete tomorrow, I'll know how much damage was done. |

What difference should it make? I would imagine that most people just shut off their car when they reach their destination.

I've not heard that, nor is it in the manual. Hell, BMW's auto start/stop technology abruptly shuts down the engine routinely when driving and stopped at a light for only a few seconds. I can't believe that's true... nor a justification for a turbo blowing on such a young car.

I think there's quite a bit of lure out there. But at the end of the day, the instruction manual that comes from the manufacturer has to be seen as the authoritative source of information.

Every car and bike I've owned gets warmed up before it's driven at anything other than pedestrian speeds and in this instance, I had been on the road for over an hour. For this BMW, regardless of it being "shut off" the car and it's fans stay on for a looooooong time to help cool itself.
Time will tell if it's user error or a defect. |

this sucks! i belive our air to water fan and pump continue to spin even after the car is turned off to give the car a proper cool down.

I've also noticed that the manual tells you to drive off immediately.
If that's what BMW wants you to do, why does the engine start up at 2k RPM then progressively make it's way down 1k RPM? It does it every single time, even when the car is warm. |

It's a turbocharger, they can go bad. It's not a BMW issue, this is more than likely an isolated issue with your specific unit (quality control from the vendor).
There are no systems in place that will alert a vehicle that it has a blown turbocharger, The tell tale sign is a substantial loss in power/high pitch whine sounds/massive amounts of white smoke out of the exhaust. The massive amount of white smoke you saw was because the oil seal in the turbo failed, causing metal on metal damage. Be happy you have a warranty and they will knock it out, My B5 Audi S4's passenger side turbo went out at 60,000 miles just out of warranty way back in the day…. that hurt my wallet since it was an engine out service!!!
