What oil do you use?

I normally get an oil change every 3500-4000 miles at my local dealership, but I recently installed my JB4 and I do not want to ruin my warranty... So I was wondering what oil do you guys use? Id like to get an oil change at a local german auto service and im open to suggestions. Thanks!

If you wanted to stray from the BMW/shell 5w30 then Mobil 1 0w40 is probably the best all around LL-01 oil which is available anywhere.

You shouldn't need to change your oil but every 15k...not every 3.5-4k!

I don't believe the Castrol oil is ll-01. If you're still under warranty make sure it meets our exceeds ll-01.

Yes, the oil will last 15k miles. It's been proven so many times by actual labs taking samples after different intervals. People often see the oil becoming dark and think it's time for an oil change. That's just the oil blend working the way it should.

Even non synthetic oil will last 5000-10,000 miles. The whole "Change oil every 3k miles" BS is marketing from the same people selling it. Auto shops push that because it's more money for them too.

What kind of vehicle requires you to change oil at 4k miles?

The whole point in BMW specifying a certain quality of oil is based upon the 15k service interval... I just follow the service schedules the car asks me to, BMW build these engines so I'm pretty sure they know when they need servicing!

Servicing every 4k with such a good quality of oil is just pissing money down the drain. Don't mean to be abrupt but it's only a mass market BMW sold the world over, it's not as if it's got a highly tuned race specification engine in the car.

I don't change my oil either, yet. I do drive the car pretty hard which in turn burns a quart of oil every 7-8k miles. My dealership refuses to top my car off :/

Additionally, if I did have my oil changed entirely I would use oil from the BMW parts department.

It is indeed. European version is 0-30 under the U.S. market alternatives are SAE 5w-30 like the one I'm using

Just called my SA @ BWW and he confirmed that our engines we're designed this way to have oil changes at 15k mile intervals.
Like mentioned above my warranty for oil changes is covered for the next two years and they are setup at 15k mile intervals. U my friend are just flushing your money down the toilet when u could use that money else where.

Also your car will remind u of your maintenance schedule. U could even check how many more miles until ur next oil change. U should really read your manual my friend and to be honest whatever dealer ur bringing it to they must be looking at u with money in their eyes!

Everyone has their opinion on oil change intervals. Best way to determine the appropriate interval is to have the oil tested. That being said, oil is inexpensive and oil changes are easy to do so I don't mind spending $50 every 5k miles for peace of mind.

Also, unless you are looking for boutique oils like redline, Walmart is usually by far the best place for oil. You can get 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 or castrol 0w40 for about $25.

When I had my M3, BMW's scheduled oil change was at 15k miles using the recommended Castrol 10W-60. I changed it at 7,500 miles and then went in for the scheduled 15k mile change. Engine oil is the least expensive component to change. Everyone drives theirs cars differently and in different climates. Here in Houston where it's been over 100 degrees for a number of days along with my style of driving, I'll change it at 7,500 miles and then go in for the 15k mile change. Engine oil begins to degrade pretty much the minute you put it in your car with dirt, heat, condensation, metals, etc...
You can spend the money on testing the oil or you can just spend that same money and change the oil.
