Battery Registration

I recently bought a 2013 535i with just under 129,000 miles that is in the shop (BMW dealership service dept.) due to the instrument cluster lights intermittently flickering. The technician stated that he can't duplicate the issue. He also said that the alternator is good, but he thinks the battery is the original and recommends that it be replaced soon. After looking over the paperwork that the previous owner gave me, the same shop had replaced and registered the battery back in March 2017, so going on 8 years. They charge $656.30 to replace/install/register a new battery. It's easy to install a battery, but can I use the BimmerLink (by SG Software GmbH & Co. KG) iPhone app or a BMW OBD Scanner (e.g., Foxwell NT510 Elite) to register the battery myself, or is it necessary to have them register the battery? TIA!

You can do it via BimmerLink app or other ones. Key is to make sure you get same xxAh as is in the car and from what I am reading BMW dealers offering best price batteries.

What type of OBD adapter do I need? The current battery is a 61-21-2-353-814 EP 105Ah: 612010. So as long it has the same 105Ah, I'm good? I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer's service dept to see if they still have this exact battery available now. I think this battery is no longer made.

Your BMW dealership may not stock their 105AH battery with the same part number that was used 8 years ago…but they do still sell a 105AH battery. Many BMWs use this battery and the slightly smaller 92AH (H8/49) class size battery…so it’s not like they don’t sell them anymore.

See the pic below…I replaced the battery in my f06 last January…and I believe this is still the same current part number for the 105AH battery (which is a 95R/H9 class size battery). I paid $227 back in Jan/2023…and in a recent thread…someone wrote that their dealership charged them $212 for this same battery.

Also, make sure your new battery has the little plastic baggy with a new replacement black elbow and vent plug. You need the black elbow to connect the car’s gray vent tube to the battery, and the extra vent plug needs to plug the vent hole on the other side of the battery so that no off-gases are vented into your enclosed battery compartment. The gases need to be vented to the exterior of the car. If you’re careful…you can probably reuse the little black elbow that should be connected to your current old battery. This will give you a spare in case you need it in the future.

If you have the Bimmerlink app then you should already have the OBD dongle adapter or cable you need. If you don’t, they list the currently approved dongles/cables on their website. You can use the www.bimmercode.app website (which is their sister app website)…or the www.bimmerlink.app website.

Registering the battery with the Bimmerlink app is as easy as opening the app, going to the 12v Battery and when you see the page below, click on the tab at the bottom to register the battery. The app will then register the battery and update the mileage info etc.

The Foxwell NT510 (older version) and NT530 (newer version) both can register a BMW battery.....as long as you have the BMW version of the scanners...(e.g. All Foxwells have a generic OBD scan feature...this feature does not support manufacturer's specific code read outs or battery registration)

Great advice above on the vent, make sure you plug the second hole. When I replaced mine last week whoever replaced the battery before me hadn't plugged the vent on the other side or coded it to the car. It was
a OEM battery and the car was a lease so I'm guessing the dealer was lazy when they were selling the car.

thanks for the verification…I remember reading it recently but I jump around between multiple 5/6/7/8/X1/X3/X5/X7 forums…I couldn’t remember which forum or the forum member’s name.

Even the full MSRP of $248 isn't that bad considering how long they last.
Costco's Interstate battery was $170 IIRC.

For the general BMW forum populous, battery label should be a choice, so Costco's Interstate battery is just fine, and has been a go-to brand by BMW owners for a long time....but the battery technology should be AGM.

I've not had good luck, even after changing the battery type in the software, with standard lead-acid batteries. I've had unexplained electrical gremlins using a high-end lead acid battery, that "magically" disappeared after resorting back to AGM.

AGM's act more like a constant voltage source, which BMW's need given their appetite for electrons, and the need to keep ECU voltage levels above their respective brown-out voltage values.

+1 to sourcing the AGM batteries from the Dealer. In my area, the 105 Ah battery lists for ~$240 from BMW parts and that is competitively priced vs the auto parts store brands. Costco doesn't even stock the H9 battery and would have to be ordered.

You have to be careful and do your homework as many of the H9 Batteries are not rated for 105 Ah (they're 100 Ah or 95 Ah) so a guy would have to code those as well as register.

My original AGM battery is 9 years old now. State of Charge is nearly constant at 80%. That's a long time for a battery to last, imho, so that's good enough for me to stick with OE and not even bother with saving a few bucks on aftermarkets.

+1 to Qsilver7 for all the battery replacement replies he's made. Because of him I'm a BMW Battery Dealer Believer.

Thanks for the pics, info, and advice, everyone! After deducting the diagnostic charge of $189.95, it should cost me around $467 for a new battery and to have them install and register it. I've calculated how much I'd save if I were to do it myself and it wouldn't be a ton of money. Since this is our first BMW, I'd rather have them do it. I have, however, ordered an ENET cable and an Apple MFi certified lightning to ethernet adapter so I can start doing some coding using my phone and the BimmerCode app.
