Smoking Ban in France? What is the world coming to??
PARIS, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The stereotypical image of French men smoking in cafes could be a thing of the past after a parliamentary committee recommended on Tuesday banning smoking in public places from Sept. 1, 2007. The parliamentary committee on smoking in public places approved a report recommending the ban in places like offices, cafes and restaurants and the government is expected to decide what it will do later this month. Polls regularly show that a majority of French people support a ban on smoking in public places. Weakened by a battle with trade unions and students over a controversial youth jobs contract, the government backed away in April from a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants to avoid a clash with France's many smokers and tobacconists. Ireland imposed the world's first nationwide smoking ban in pubs, restaurants and workplaces in 2004. Several countries have since imposed similar bans, including Italy, Sweden and Ukraine. According to government statistics, smoking kills 66,000 smokers each year while a further 5,000 people die from passive smoking.

There is a newly implemented smoking ban in Connecticut. As soon as I moved to Florida I realized there is no such law here. It stinks because you can't go bowling or play pool without choking to death.

Mon Dieu! There is one here in NJ and soon in Philadelphia. It would seem odd to me now to go somewhere that permitted smoking.

Good. I wish certain states in the US would step up to the plate as others have (Virginia being one of those that I wish would ban it, but it wont happen here).
If you choose to kill yourself by smoking, by all means, Im not going to stop you. That doesnt mean that everybody else has to put up with your problem though... |

I went to another E90post forum's gig last Wednesday. Since May 1st this year smoking is illegal IN BARS in Quebec!!!! WOW!! When i used to play in bars (1994 was the last time) I swore I would never do it again because of the stink and the obviuos health effects.
Well last Wednesday was a treat...no smoke, just great music (and I had a coffee). my wednesday night restaurant gig is also smoke-free, which i greatly appreciate.

I get it.
I lived in North Carolina for three years...doubt they'll ever ban smoking there (at least in public places).

I'm not too happy with the smoking ban here in Quebec. I agree with prohibiting smoking in restaurants, but bars and clubs that’s going too far. A lot of bars are losing money. People are staying home, especially when it rains. Now that winter is coming it’s going to be a disaster. The fact is that smokers are more fun than non-smokers. For anyone who goes out regularly on Friday and Saturday night you’ve probably noticed that it’s just not has fun anymore. Montreal is going to become a boring city just like Toronto. Plus, I rather smell smoke than b.o.
Stew I’m sure you’ve noticed, on Crescent and Saint-Laurent, there are more people outside than inside, the party is outside now.

CA has had this law for such a long time that when I was in AZ last year, a hostess at a restraunt asked me if I wanted smoking or non. I just stared at her. After a few seconds it clicked in, and I felt very stupid.

There are no benefits from drinking, maybe we should make alcohol illegal too.
