Just had the battery replaced...and now limp mode...and now engine replacement...
I just had the battery replaced on Monday and now my rig's back in the shop after having went into limp mode...CRIPES!!! SA says it could be injector or ignition related. Anyone else experience this?

So...what wasn't wrong..?! Dealership replaced all injectors and plugs, as well as the crankcase ventilation hoses and vacuum pump. All parts and labor warrantied - thank God - cost to BMW $4300!!!
I'll say this once...you would be crazy to own a 550i outside of some sort of warranty coverage!

How many miles are on your car and how many mpg's were you getting?
Also, what brand and octane gas do you use? I have a 2011 750Li xDrive with nearly 30k miles, and this is concerning. |

I purchased as a CPO in June of this year with 42k miles. This service occurred right at 47k miles. I use 93 octane gas from BP/Amoco almost exclusively. I usually get 20-21 mpg in mixed highway/city driving.

I ran BP/Amoco gas in my 335i for 50k miles and never had an issue. I have no idea about the fuel habits of the previous owner during the 3-year lease, or if it contributed to the injector/plug issues. If I get time, I'm gonna ring my SA tomorrow and ask if this is a common occurrence with this engine and mileage.

And the saga continues...limp mode again this past Sunday and this morning. A scan for fault codes revealed P0301 "Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected". I suspect a bad coil pack, but won't know for sure until I drop it off at the dealership again. I'll update when I know more.

So apparently the issue this time was software related. According to a service bulletin, the remedy is to reprogram the entire vehicle... Picked up the car this afternoon - we'll see if the issue is really resolved in the next few days of driving.

So, the latest word from my SA is that they continue to capture the cylinder 1 misfire fault code after switching the potentially faulty coil pack from cylinder 1 to another cylinder. They observed that the cylinder 1 spark plug was fouled even though all eight plugs were just replaced, so they're hoping it's just a bad plug. If not, they've pretty much eliminated everything but compression as a potential issue. Although there are some non-catastrophic causes for compression loss, I'm really hoping that's not the issue. I could be looking at an engine replacement depending on how this shakes out...

The dealer did the regular service and said the new software upgrade fixed the battery issue. I assumed it enabled the alternator to kick in early and nor rely on the brakes to charge as much. Got it back and it ran fine except I lost all Dinan 3 stuff and my coding. Two days later it starts running very rough, dieseling so I make an appointment. Bam, I get the drivetrain malfunction and warnings. It's at the shop and I am in an X1..... Will let you know what happens too |

So after replacing the freshly fouled spark plug, they're still getting the cylinder 1 misfire. They did a compression test today and it revealed only a 10% pressure drop, which is apparently within tolerance (12%). They plan on checking to make sure the newly installed injector is not bad after they return from the Christmas break. If it's not, they will start assessing whether to do a short block (below the head only) or long block (includes the head) replacement. They told me they don't believe the issue is valve related, so short block replacement is probably the most likely route.
I'm really starting to wonder about the previous owner's driving habits...I'm betting he was a WOT on a cold engine kinda guy.. MERRY FRIGGIN' CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!

Have they checked the vanos at all. I had the exact same thing and a vanos bolt sheared off they replaced both vanos units and have been great ever since.

My SA hasn't mentioned them checking the VANOS or having a suspicion that it might be the culprit. The service department is closed until 12/26, but I'll mention it to them when they reopen and see what they say. Thanks for the suggestion.

The verdict is in...and it's an engine replacement! After pulling the head and measuring the piston height in the block, they found the cylinder 1 piston extension to be 2mm short. They believe at some point the injector stuck open causing a buildup of fuel, which in turn caused an inability for the piston to compress the fuel enough to allow full travel within the cylinder, with the outcome being a bent rod.
They're still thinking a short block replacement is all that will be necessary, as they don't believe there's any damage to the head, valves, etc. Unbelievable.. I go in on 12/9 with a bad battery, and as I sit here this morning, I'm looking at an engine replacement. What's the cost of all of this you ask? $25K ($20K parts + $5K labor). Again, you'd be crazy to own this vehicle outside of some form of warranty!!!! More updates as I get them...

Wow, that's rough. At least it's covered under warranty, though. I've had two other BMWs that I kept outside of warranty (both 3-series) and had very good luck with them... all issues ever encountered were minor (a few hundred bucks here and there). The 325i had 125k miles when I traded it (owned from new), and it's biggest issue ever was an oil separator that went bad somewhere around 110k miles. The rest were minor things like window regulators.
Clearly, the more expensive and complex the car becomes, the more likely the issues and expense along with it. I've considered CPO, and know others who have had good luck with them, but the truth is you'll never know how the car was driven, maintained (or not), treated, etc prior to you. That's not to say this couldn't happen to a brand new car, though... sometimes it's just the luck of the draw. When I was getting my '07 335i, I remember reading post after post of people being stranded by their high pressure fuel pump malfunctions. Some people even had 2 and 3 replacements done and still ended up stranded. Well, 89k miles have passed on my 335i and it's being traded now for the 550i... and the dreaded HPFP issue never reared its head in 6+ years and 89k miles. So, who knows. One good option to look at, though, instead of BMW's pretty darn expensive extended warranty is Geico's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI). It covers the car to 100k miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. You also need to add it to your car before hitting 15k miles (or 1 year old, I believe) - so CPO cars likely wouldn't qualify. But essentially the MBI (which costs all but a few bucks per year in your insurance) will cover any mechanical or electrical failures. There's a $250 deductible per incident... but this can really come in handy if the car exits warranty and you end up with a $4k repair bill. Best of luck with getting everything sorted out. I'm sure they'll make it "good as new" again for you... you'll have half of a new engine, at least! |

I too lived through the great e9x HPFP crisis. And though I did have the pump replaced in my '09 335i (which I really miss), the original never gave signs of issue. For that matter, my 335i was very reliable and problem free, both before and after the addition of a Dinan Stage 2 tune. Did I purchase a CPO lemon in my 550i? I really don't think so, but time will ultimately tell. One thing is for certain, I will not own this vehicle past the 100k CPO warranty.
