1 day old and back to the dealer :-(

My new F10 530d was delivered yesterday after more than 5 months of waiting. I had to visit our head office today (150 miles mainly on motorway) and was looking forward to a nice long run there and back to get used to the car. After 10 miles a warning message comes up saying:'Chassis' 'Drive moderately and contact Service Desk ya-de-ya-de-ya'

So it's now back at the dealer and I should get it back tomorrow (they think its just a sensor fault.......). What a let down

I had the same thing It was the Chassis Stability 4x4 or something. Car drove fine. Was a software fix for a service bulletin.

My Jetta was back to the dealer the first day: Electric fan gone bad, and it overheated.

Did they the service inspection before delivering? I don't think so.

Same for me with my brand new E91 (3 series Touring). Driving home after delivery (40 km's), "bing-bing - Please visit your dealer - malfunction of all driving assistance systems". Get it back three days later because they had to replace the black-box for that...

Sill at the dealer sitting in a service bay

Dealer did say the fault wouldn't have been caught in the pre-delivery inspection as the car would need to do few miles before the fault would trigger.

Apparently it was a faulty sensor but they decided to replace the whole part (sorry technical people, I've forgotten what part it was) which then requires a system initialisation (ie total car reboot). But only BMW Germany can do the final reinitialisation so the car has been sitting there all day connected to a computer at the dealer which is connected to a computer in Germany waiting for a final reboot. After 8 hours - no reboot. Dealer swears blind it will happen overnight and I'll get my car back tomorrow.....

So 2 days without my new car

Only consolation is that they did loan me a Limited Edition M3 Coupe whilst they have my car.

But I have to say that after that problem I never had any other during the whole 3 years I owned the car. So I would assume that it will be the same for you.

Not a good start after such a long wait, let's hope this is a minor glitch and all is well once you get it back.

Dealer's comment makes sense, not all issues will show while in the garage.

I had a new VW Passat which wouldn't lock when I got home, on the first day with it... worked fine in the hand over. So you are not alone in cars going straight back into the garage. Mine took a week to sort, so hoping yours is quicker than that.

Forgive me for being cynical, but i don`t buy the fact the car has to be connected to a computer in Germany for a software download. BMW GB I am sure will have exactly the same equipment as they do in Germany. My bet is that your dealer has no idea what the problem is...if this was me i would be asking to see the general manager about some sort of compensation...driving an M3 is not compensation...IMO.

I think it is ok. We had exactly the same with an old 330. The car gets a new black box for the Xenons and it need to stay over night at the dealer connected for programming directly from Munich.

This may be true if you reside in Germany, so what happens if you live in USA, Thailand or India..are you saying all these countries have to link up to Munich to download 8 hours of software...BMW would need a super computer if more than 1 car needed a fix..

You are not an IT guy I assume? I am, so I can tell this is no problem and no super computer needed...

Well lets hope the guy with a 2 day old car that doesnt work, gets it fixed via Munich so he can enjoy what he paid for.

It wasn't connecting/downloading for 8 hours, I believe it was waiting for someone to press a button in Germany

So the dealer calls me this morning and informs me that the reboot hasn't happened and without exactly explaining why, tells me they need to keep the car for another 2-3 days

But then at 2pm I get an email from the dealer saying 'good news, your car is fixed and en-route back to you'. So I have the car back and everything seems hunky dory (for the moment).

More than likely it needed to be re-initialized and coded and they were waiting from someone at BMW-AG in Munich to release/send them the access codes which would allow the reboot to proceed. In these new BMWs it seems all things are controlled by software and unless you have the correct access codes..nothing happens.

If the dealer would let me drive a M3, I would tell them to take the time and fix it slowly

You might think that, but after 3 years in a 330Ci on 19" low profile tyres (and yes I know that there is a big difference between the 330 and M3 ), I was looking forward to a comfortable but sporty ride in my new F10 - old age catches up with us all

Also, 2 days is not enough to get used to the M3 (it was only 30 minutes before handing it back that I found the power settings, and they were set at highest - no wonder I had so much wheel spin and traction control going off). But more importantly I reckon if i had kept it any longer I would have lost my licence - you can hit over 100mph in a blink of an eye
