Road trip protection LA-SF

Would you guys bother using painters tape on the front/partial hood when road tripping from LA to SF? or just leave it since its not too long of a trip.

Going up in a few weeks so I'm just weighing what to do... I don't have a clear bra so I was wondering if it might be worth wrapping the front.

Sidenote: probably just going to leave it be and wash it when I get back... just curious if anyone would recommend using the tape.

This time of year there are alot more bugs

If its not for the chips from stones, all those damn
Bugs will be a pain to remove, not to mention they can
Chip the softer parts like the bumper face

Oh man... I didn't even consider that haha. I was just focused on the chips from flying down the 5. Might be a good idea to tape the bumper and half the hood...

Have you had experiences with the painters tape? Before, I was thinking that the bugs would still be a problem because I wouldn't be protecting every part of the car, but maybe protecting just the front nose is enough?

If you know it is not going to be busy on the 5 (i.e. 3 day weekends like memorial day) I think you should be ok forgoing the tape. I had the same worries the 2 times I took the 5 instead of a rental. Other than the bugs, the rocks are usually caused by the cars or big rigs kicking them up in front of you. Try leaving early AM if possible - both times i left the bay area at round 1 or 2am and had the 5 to myself with minimal debris flying up at the car.

If you can't leave early and want more protection than the tape - try the 3M spray defender (clear bra like spray) or clear plasti dip. Both should get you more coverage and will peel off when your done.

Bring the radar detector

haha thanks for the input. Yea, ideally I would be leaving in the AM like 3/4am but I have to leave around 2pm. So hopefully I miss most of the people leaving from work.

I'll definitely check out the spray on protectors. Bugs are meh as I'm sure I'll wash the car after the trip(3/4 days). I wish I had a radar detector.... Probably the next investment lol

Painters tape is good but just dont yank it off.

Yo may want to put it on the mirrors as well.

Would the residue be easy to get off? I was planning to take it off right after the drive.

Youll be fine.

You just dont want to damage your paint by just wildly yanking it off.
