I'm jealous. My wife and I stayed in a http://=http://gormans-clifftophouse... and breakfast on the Dingle Peninsula - Gorman's Clifftop B&B and it was absolutely stunning. The bed and breakfast overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. I want to go back. I would like to live on in County Kerry. We drove about 800 miles across the countryside and it was unbelievable. We also got to rent a BMW 520D which I've always wanted to do out of the country --- It handle great on the curvy mountain roads. I can't wait to do it again.

Thank you all for your kind words. The area is northwest Donegal and the mountain in the background is Mount Errigle. Great driving area - twisty roads with little traffic.

Yea Dom, have to agree ... your F10 looks stellar and the backdrop just brings it out more, nice work.
Bit of a side note, could you recommend the best ferry service from Europe to Ireland? Was kicking around the idea of taking a driving trip to Ireland instead of flying.

Personally I like to spend as little time on the ferry as poss and as much time on the road seeing the country/countries I'm visiting. Therefore i would suggest coming to Ireland via Stranraer-Larne ( one hour) and then heading up the beautiful Antrim coast road towards Ballycastle (taking in Carrig a' Ree Rope Bridge, Dunluce Castle and the Giants Causeway ). Then you could head on up to Donegal and from there down the west coast to Sligo, Mayo, Galway. Kerry, Cork etc. Then back to the ferry via Waterford, Wexford, Dublin and Belfast. You would have completed a full circle then.

That would be a great road trip & a fantastic way to see the diversity of Irish landscape & culture.
Dom’s advice is perfect & if I may had, I would recommend getting the boat from Rotterdam/Holland into Hull/England then up to Stranraer/Scotland & into Belfast, on your return get the ferry from Dublin into Wales & make your way towards the Euro Tunnel, taking in South Wales, Cotswolds, Kent etc. This way you can see/spend time in north England/Scottish Boarders, Ireland North & South, Wales & Southern England. The North Antrim Coast on a nice day is a fabulous drive, I drove Highway 1 San Fran to LA & was standing in Monterey/Carmel area thinking how beautiful the area was & how good the driving roads were, when I lifted a magazine reviewing the best driving roads in the world to discover the North Antrim Coast road, a road 25/30minutes from me ranked higher than HW1. Given my pick I’d go with California but Ireland is a beautiful country, something unfortunately many of its locals don’t fully appreciate, but I think we can all be culprits of that at times. When I get my new 5 Series I intend visiting the west coast this summer, Galway, ring of Kerry, really looking forward to it. Last edited by J13NY S; 03-29-2011 at 05:00 AM.. |

Thanks Dom and J13, already checking out the ferry websites, think of trying to get the most out of a 9 day tour including the places you mention. In the end we are leaning more towards the west coast and saving the bigger cities, Dublin, Belfast, etc for weekend trips by plane.
I was originally intending to take a ferry from France to Ireland but these seem pretty time consuming. Might be best as you suggested to cut through UK.

I’ve drove to Germany quite a few times in search of a wee town called Nurburg, being German you may of heard of it, not sure about anyone else on here... LOL & the quickest way for us from Northern Ireland bear in mind is over into Scotland, down into England & over into Holland.
A lot shorter than via the Euro Tunnel or Ireland/France. Another way for you would perhaps be Cherbourg France into Rosslare Co. Wexford & go clockwise round Ireland, then get the boat from Belfast over to Scotland back via Hull-Rotterdam completely missing out Dublin. If you decide to go via Hull-Rotterdam return price P&O then phone the link below & they should significantly reduce the cost of the crossing return only remember. www.nutttravel.com |
