In the U.S., you can't get the Combox without BMW Assist. That said, even without the BMW Assist "Service", I believe all Telematics are still though the Combox as it replaced the TCU Module.

From the Combox TIS:

"Although the Combox is only available in combination with the BMW Assist (option 639), different versions of the control unit are used depending on the vehicle's electrical system and optional equipment.

Vehicle electrical system BN2020 (L6[F0x] as of 09/2010)

• Combox with telematics (With BMW Assist)
• Combox with telematics and GPS receiver (With BMW Assist and Navigation)

With the introduction of the Combox the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) is no longer needed nor installed.

All BMW vehicle telematics functions are enabled by the Combox with no additional control units required.
"

The fact that yours upgraded from TX-003.004.031 to TX-003.005.004 with the UPD01004.bin flash seems to support that your Telematics too are part of the Combox, even without BMW Assist.

Again, what I would like to know though is what exactly determines the TX/MX version you get out of the UPD01004.bin flash, as there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it yet, and what does version TX/MX 3.5.4. include that I am not getting in TX 2.6.4 / MX 2.5.21.

Frankly, I can't see any reason for BMW to not put the latest software version on every Combox equipped vehicle, unless the software is somehow not backwards compatible with older hardware (Combox) units. That though doesn't seem to jive with their BMW Combox Launch promotional claim:

"Along with the new features and functions that the Combox enables, one of its key advantages is that it will be upgradeable, allowing it to continually be compatible with the latest and greatest devices on the market."

If you can't upgrade to the latest Software versions, then it isn't fully upgradeable.
shawnsheridan,

Did you find out anything more on this? I have the same version as you and hence the same issue. Build date 1010...

No. I'm still stuck at TX 2.6.4 / MX 2.5.21 and in the dark as to why.

Hi guys,

little help needed. I have a BMW x5 2010 and when going to bmw.com/update for the update file, after inputting the VIN number I'm getting this

"To perform the software update via USB stick, you will require the USB audio interface (included in optional equipment codes 6FL, 6NK or 6NL) as well as the Control Display and iDrive. This offer is only available for selected vehicles manufactured after March 2010. Your vehicle can be updated provided that you have the ‘Software update’ option on your ‘Settings’ menu in the Control Display."

Does it mean the only way to do it is to go to the dealer?

This is to update the Combox software only, which began appearing in F10's built in 09/10. I'm not sure when though they began in E70's. The Combox module hardware replaced the TCU/MULF modules for Telematics and Media functions. Unless you have a Combox, this software won't do any good.

Thanks! BMW.be still gave me the old one... Got the new one from the above link and the upgrade itself was painless.
Now figuring out what actually changed for my combination (iPhone4S with 5.0.1).

Update: answering the phone using the steering wheel button still not working...

This didn't help much:http://www.bmw.com/_common/shared/ow...D01004_ENG.pdf
Hi, I noticed after I applied the update that I can no longer answer the iphone from the steering wheel too!

Same for me on my 8/2010 E92 M3. It seems I have a older version of the Combox. I did no see any changes until now, but I noticed an improvement in sound quality for my Ipod classic...or lets say a better preset for the sound.

So is it possible to download the update and put it on my iphone and update from there using the iphone cord or Y-cable?

Do I have to use a USB stick?

Software updates like this usually require the update file to be stored in the root folder of the USB drive. I doubt it would work if you save it to your phone. Besides, the USB port for system update and the port where you connect your phone are different, right?

You have to use idrive joystick to answer the first call, after the first call your steering wheel button should work again. Thanks BMW

After weeks of arm twisting, I finally got some love from my dealer, and yesterday they upgraded my vehicle software from Integration Level F010-10-12-503 (≈ ISTA/P 40.x) to Integration Level F010-11-09-507 (ISTA/P 45.1.3.0). Looking at the ISTA/P Final Report, it looks like damn near every control module in the car was updated. As part of the ISTA update, my Combox software was automatically updated to MX/TX 3.4.31, and than I reran the UPD01004 USB update, and it updated further to the latest MX/TX 3.5.4.

Also, as part of the CIC update, ConnectedDrive replaced BMW Assist on the main iDrive menu, which I incorrectly thought was only the case if optioned with 6NR BMW Apps.

using a 4S with iOS6 and updated to the latest BMW MX3.5.4/TX3.5.5 shown by MEN@BimmerTech

My findings:
- without the new BMW update, using bluetooth music playing, iOS6 robbed me from jumping to the next song within a single podcast. This is now back again (playing music through USB it still jumps to the next podcast, not the next song in the current podcast)
Note: the combination of the previous BMW version and iOS5.1.1 this worked fine as well.
- no changes so far about receiving SMS (works fine) and email (only with the workaround of changing the mail notifications when connected with the car)

I installed the update, and now I no longer get texts or emails thru iDrive.

I restored the previous version (4) and am still not getting texts or emails.

Any ideas?

I haven't had a chance to test it myself, so please post your results here.

I posted this last week. It did NOTHING for me. In addition, WHY would BMW wait until AFTER the release of iOS 6 to correct problems with iOS 5 ??? Most iPhone users are using 6.0 by this point.
