Carbon Black is actually a really dark blue. In bright sunlight and certain angles it looks very deep blue but under darker lighting it looks almost black. So you could say its a really dark blue/black. I saw it on an X5 at my local dealer and it's really impressive. The downside is when it's dirty or dusty it can look more black than blue. Imperial Blue is a dark blue and would rarely be mistaken for black. It has a special Xirallic pigment in it that 'sparkles' like a metallic at different angles (but more colourful). On the downside when it's dirty or dusty it can look flat

What does your paperwork/order say? If it states Sophisto Grey II Xirallic then you have the Xirallic paint. If it says Metallic then its metallic. It looks like in the UK they might have changed SGII from Xirallic to metallic around April/May 2012 but I'm only going on what my leasing company and the BMW configurator used to say (and we all know how up to date they are)

The UK Sophisto Grey II is B90 - this is the Xirallic version. Both AP and I have the same colour, it is the Sophisto Grey Xirallic.

I have double checked this on a VIN lookup as well...

paperwork doesn't say either just SGII. Quatation states B90.
If its chanegd from xirallic to metallic, I'd expect the code to change (C90?)
I'#ve jsut looked at the Uk website and its still B90 although they have dropepd xirallic. I suspect this might be an error, eitehr that opr B90 was never xirallic in the first place and only A90 was.

B90=metallic

B90 = SOPHISTOGRAU BRILLANTEFFEKT METALLI

Brilliant Effect is Xirallic, double checked with my dealer just now.

Sophisto Grey II is B90 Xirallic (this is definitely the statement for UK - it may be different in different countries)

Smile

If you want to know what Sophisto Grey II looks like in cloudy weather...and in slightly better weather (yes Sweden is like this...), please look at my link with pics.

Not sure about this. Sophisto Grey II is now definitely metallic not Xirallic in the UK according to the BMW website and the BMW configurator which seems to be up-to-date shows it as B90.

I also think the brochure still shows it as Xirallic and the code as B90. So B90 could refer to either Xirallic or metallic.

All very confusing and very BMW.

I thought the only difference between A90 and B90 is the supplier. A90 is the original one source from japan but following the Tsunami a different supplier was found. (not sure where).
I'd also guess there are differences between them although its perhaps subtle.

At the end of the day, look at a car in the metal and make a call on whether you like it not. Its what it is

To get back on thread (and for those who are still interested) I'm sticking with Imperial Blue Xirallic. Whilst whiling away an hour in a traffic jam this morning next to an F11 in Imperial Blue I decided it's a great colour (just hope it wasn't Deep Sea Blue )

But just to make life more difficult, I've been approached for a job in California. So do I cancel/postpone my build (starting in a couple of weeks) while i think about it or stick my company with a car they don't want....

(oh and did I say it's the same company but different division.....)

That's what I was told when I got mine. Different supplier so they had to change the product code.

I haven't compared SG1 with SG11 side by side so don't know if they're is a clear difference. Either way I'm happy with my choice

There is a difference, it's not just the supplier.

The shortage in Japan was of the xirallic formulation, not any one paint. This hit ALL manufacturers using xirallic paint including Volvo and others, etc. Had nothing to do with just BMW's paint.

The colors are markedly different when viewed side by side.

Imperial looks better when its clean and under direct sunlight

Sophisto looks better when its dirty compare to Imperial.

Both looks fantastic if you plan on maintaining the paint very well.

So I think I'll have to change to white. The only time my car gets cleaned is at the airport valet parking every month or so

Sweet! I can not wait to get my car!

Can't decide whether to go for Imperial Blue with Oyster/Black interior or Carbon Black with Cinnamon Brown interior.

What do you think?
