It shows only the "chrome rings of the circular instruments" when the ignition is off. 5GT from HK dealer equips with this technology as standard offer. Congratulation and Enjoy the honeymoon.

I got the blackpanel feature probably due to upgrade to Nav. I can't remember the exact cost of Nav. The upgrade costs me about 70K to include Nav with bigger screen, rear blindshade and hifi professional. I can tell the performance of Nav's GPS signal is excellent no matter where you are (even surrounded by highrise). Perhaps it makes use of Shark Fin antenna on the car roof. The option of Nav includes more than bigger screen. It integrates into the dashboard showing sign, direction and street name.

jmpng: can you post a photo or two of the dash with the engine and electronics turned off? I'm curious to see more pics of how the speedometer and tachometer numbers look when everything is shut down, because there has been some confusion about which models (and packages) get which version of the black panel display... and I've yet to see the full black panel (pictured in post #4 above) in a GT.

Mine is iPhone 4 too. I called BMW Service but they say it's "normal" to have lost connection!! Maybe yours is with Navi, lucky you

Cool... I could not remember whether the GT I test drove had the full black panel display, and I guess the 5 sedans don't have it at all... mine arrives in a few weeks so I now know what to expect!

RC3: Oh really? I'd better ask BMW to check again upon my annual check-up then. Thanks.

same for my 3gs as well. never lost connection. Also, the mic is alot more sensitive than the iphone's. i can just speak at normal pace and the speakers are very clear too.

iphone and blackberry, both can connect very well. not at the same time of course! No issue at all.
jmpng, can you share experience of the BMW NAV? are the Hong Kong maps detail enough when compared to, say papago? Howabeout China, do you drive to China? if so did BMW activate china maps for you as well? thinking of retrofit this NAV system or just buy papago..... |

As far as I know, bmw doesn't provide retrofit for nav. Bmw sales told me the car had to be built together with the nav as it involved many different parts. It will be very expensive if the nav is added later.
I used to have a Papago. There is no comparison between them as they both fit the purpose but Papago doesn't fit the use. Nav is an integrated solution that is more responsive, accurate and reliable. The nav map are more details down to the location of traffic light posts. One thing of nav not user friendly is the input method that does not have chinese handwriting feature. Mine only supports hk map. No comment on china map but I imagine it is more or less the same. |

The nav supports English , transitional and simplified Chinese language with menu to choose. But it only displays one Language either English or Chinese street/building names on the map.
