How Do I Change The Engine Air Filters?

I have searched this forum in vain, and elsewhere on the web, to find out how to change the engine air filters on my car (2012 550i). Can someone point me in the direction of a set of instructions to do this job, or better still an instructional video?

The dealership wanted $220 to do this job, which I thought was a 5 minute task. Apparently not.

They don't call it the stealership for nothing. It probably is a 5 minute job, but I have a 535i not a 550i, so I can't really help you out. All it took for mine was a torx bit screw driver. Do a youtube search for n63 air filter, or something similar.

Same here, I've done it numerous times on a N55, not a N63 but I believe the N63 intakes are towards the front, close to the front grills. You'll have 2 separate intakes (as opposed to 1 on a N55). Just look for 2 flat box looking containers towards the front of the car, with large intake tubing attached to it going to the engine. Unscrew the covers by a torx wrench and you'll have access to the filters.

550i air intake is on the back of the engine.
It involves a lot of screws to undo.
1 on each side.

Just curious, aren't the filters up front though? How come I see modded 550 guys with red cone filters seen through the grills?

"Modded" is the word.

its actually not that difficult. remove the engine cover, then 1 clip holds each airboxe in place. remove those, and the intake tube. unclip the MAF sensors. take the two airboxes out. then remove the screws off of each airbox, remove the filter and put it back in reverse order. 10-15 mins.
while you're at it, remove those carbon filters inside the airbox as well!
