How many miles do they last? 19"
Hello,
Just saw an ex-demo 520D, it has many toys that I would like, but the big 19" tyres brings up my worries. They are the "351M" style 19", front 8.5J 245/40 R19, rear 9J 275/35 R19. These tyres are not cheap, but how many miles do they last? Does the rear ones last shorter than the front? |

Must be different miles in the US.... Seriously, I know your roads are long and straight but 30,000 miles out of ultra-low profiles?
No chance of that in the UK, my 19" need replacing after about 13 - 15k miles - very prone to shoulder wear. And yes they're eye-wateringly expensive.

If you can get over 15K on a rear 275 section, here in the UK, you'll be doing very well indeed. HighlandPete |

I have just completed 20k miles on my 520d with 350m 18" wheels. Rear tyres need replacing and are £300 each. Front tyres would last another 5k as long as your tracking is level. I am looking to buy a full set of staggered 351m wheels with newish tyres if anyone in the UK is thinking of selling theirs.

I've got the same size 19 in my f10 and so far covered 24k miles with 5.5mm left on fronts and 3.5mm left on rears. Rears will need replacing pretty soon I guess.
I am looking at sticking with Michelin primacy hp which are on now and a set of rear tyres should set you back about £600 ish. Fronts look like they should last quite a bit longer |

About to take delivery of a Bracknell F11 tomorrow with 19's, never got to actually drive one but got suckered in by the looks. It's a March '12 with 6.5k on the clock, i've always thought I'd move away from the run flats, we'll see.

Mm...£1200 to change the full set, by average the tyre cost about £100 each month. If I keep the car for 5 years, with the cost of the tyres, I could get a big sun roof, radar cruise control, comfort seats... all these. Comparing to the tyre cost, all these options look reasonable priced now.
When I look at the BMW used car web site, many of the 5GT are in 20" tyres. I guess that is not only eye watering? Does any one has the standard 17" on the 520D? Do they last longer? |

Unless you're carrying a spare, don't. I was thinking about doing away with my run flats too but after one blew on me ( only 1300 on the clock) I'm glad I had them. I can only imagine what would have happened had it been a non runflat and I was in the middle of no where...

Thanks for that Shockin, yup that's the concern, reading about the apparently awful impact on ride quality from years back was my main concern, but believe the technology has improved since it was first introduced. Sitting at home expectantly waiting for delivery, the kids will get a shock, haven't told them ! |

A lot of issues being raised here, cost of tyres, wear rates, wheel sizes, non run-flats, ride quality and winter options.
I suppose it all depends on where our priorities are and what compromises we are willing to make. I've been through all of this since BMW moved to RFTs. My E39 was a superb package (in all ways) on 17" wheels, balance of costs, wear rates, superb ride, full size spare wheel. E91 changed all that, thinking through the implications of what wheels, suspension, spare wheel options, particularly on non run-flats, etc., etc., made owning a BMW a bit more complex, with too much compromise. This time around, with the F10/11, I was determined to try and keep with RFTs, for the obvious reasons, but still get a decent ride and balance of all the other compromises. My final decision, keep to RFTs, but to get the best from the chassis, have Adaptive Drive, 18" wheels (square setup) to optimise ride quality on poor roads, help keep tyre costs in check, plus 17" winter wheels for ride quality in winter and keep to sensible costs. Add tyre insurance for all 8 wheels, up to 5 claims. Replacement on a puncture, so one pucture or tyre failure will cover the insurance cost. Plus I can run-on-flat if necessary without feeling I need to try and salvage the tyre. I do carry a compressor, so if a slow puncture can extend the range a bit (if appropriate) to get to a tyre shop or home. My 18" summer wheels (Continental Sport Contact 3 SSR) are showing just over 5mm tread depth, after 8k miles, so changing at around 3mm will mean 15k miles is looking to be top mileage. That is not driving hard, just normal rural use and some pretty coarse surfaces. Winter wheels, not long enough to have any meaningful data. At present, getting all I set out to achieve, hopefully that will continue. HighlandPete |

Got 21k out of the original RFT rears on my 351 19's and the fronts still had 4+ mm on them at that time. Then swapped to Pirelli sottozero RFT winter tyres on the 351's, they then covered 27k on the rear, again with 4+ mm still on the front. Now changed to 356 20's with Dunlop summer RFT's, they've done 9k miles and still look like new. 80% of my driving is on motorways if that helps. Would defiantly recommend the winter 19's but at £400 a corner they are not cheap.....

My car arrived Friday so having driven it around for the weekend I'd say worry less about tyre cost and more about if your happy to live with the ride compromise, certainly with the state of the roads here at the moment there's a lot of crashing around going on

I got 20k (down to 3mm) from the original 18" Continentals on the rear of my 535d. Mainly longish A road runs, a good bit of motorway cruising and a great deal of fast, twisty country road fun.
