Avant Garde rims? any good?
Just saw this car:
Like the look of these rims and from what I see online they're surprisingly affordable! Anyone know anything about Avant Garde wheels? I think they run for a thousand and change for the set? Could be wrong? Maybe the owner of this car is here and can comment? |

Is it forged or cast? If it's cast, steer away (I think AG are Low Pressure Cast). The minimum for BMW wheels should be rotary forged (i.e. Forgestar F14/CF10), ideally fully forged. Cast are too soft and heavy.
Example: 20" Stance Evolution weighs about 35lbs ($1500/set), ForgeStar F14 weighs 25lbs ($2,200/set), and 2-piece forged are even lighter + stronger ($3,500+/set). Unsprung weight and strength are crucial when choosing any wheels. You don't have much rubber ridding between the wheels and the road, strength is important even if you're just crusing. Wheel strength hierarchy as follow (weakest to strongest): High Pressure Cast < Low Pressure Cast < Rotary Forged < Forged (3-piece, 2-piece, then mono) Just my 2 pennies. AG are low pressure cast just as most stock BMW wheels. Their weight is less than most stock F10 wheels. I have them, and they are nice for the price. If you have potholes and the like to avoid on your streets, you might consider going forged for the strength. Of course, the strength comes as a higher price.

Avant Garde wheels are low pressure cast and do utilize the same manufacturing process as most OEM wheels. They're a great choice and are extremely popular among the community!

If anyone's had problems with cast wheels they would be doing us a favor by letting us know. The premium for forged wheels (besides looks and a few lbs.) needs to be validated to be worth it. |

I purchased a set of M510s for my F10 and one of them was bent two weeks in. I remember hitting a pot hole the night before but I must have hit it at 10-15mph because it happened right after I had started driving my car and merging into the street. Mine are powder coated so I don't know if that process makes the wheels any softer but the local shop that fixed it for me told me that the wheel was so soft it took them almost no time to fix it. The good thing is the powder coating wasn't even touched in the process but I'm a little concerned about how easy it was to bend them.
Hope I'm just unlucky and that some of you have had better experiences with AV wheels. |

I've had a few sets of Avant Garde and they help up the same as my forged wheels.
Granted I never hit any sort of potholes but daily driving around socal with no issues. |

Ah, there you are sickwitit. I saw your post of a bent rim somewhere else and was looking for a follow up. Scary if that happened so easily. I know we have pot-holes on the interstate here in the south. I can't imagine hitting one with my family in the car. That seems very dangerous.

284 for the wheel but by the time you throw in a jack, it's closer to 450. Still much cheaper than the one for the F07, which is 399 for just the wheel.

I had some M310's on my e60. The were heavier than my OEM 124's, granted they were 20" vs 18". They did weigh a lot though. I think 29-30 lbs depending on front/rear. Kindof heavy, but inline with a cast wheel. I have TSW Nurburgrings on my MB, similar spoke style but no concavity. They are "rotary forged" and weigh a surprising 21lb per wheel. 20s weigh less than my OEM 18's. They're technically still cast wheels, but surprisingly light. Where the AG's didn't impress me was their strength. I had multiple bends, and they were all pretty bad. Maybe 5 total on 3 wheels. One so bad it deflated the tire and I needed to be put on my spare. While I try to avoid potholes, in LA some times it's inevitable and avoidable. The TSW's held up very strong. I could hear it hit the pothole, that loud thunk that makes your heart sink, but no bends and no cracks. I think the lip might of gotten slightly scored/rashed but no bends. Very surprised a couple times when I was sure it would have bent like my AG's. All my experiences, hopefully it helps....
