GT Navigation System

My 550GT is now a year old, I heard the 2012 navigation update is out, so I went to my dealer for the update DVD. Multiple attempts to find one for my model, but no luck. Turns out it can't be owner installed (which is what the manual says), you have to check the car in for service and they download it. Now comes the rub, this is not your usual $199 purchase, it's a $230 upgrade, plus labor, so it totals out at $350 ... almost 2x the outlay for my 2008 4.4 X5 navigation updates!! Needless to say, while I've always had a navigation system on my BMWs for the last 15 years, and updated them annually, I didn't do it this time. I can buy a Garmin stand alone for the same price, with 4 updates a year for the life of the model ... and it also gives me additional features, like weather weather radar, etc. Has anyone else come across this new navigation issue on later model BMWs?

Well, I took the plunge and ordered the USB stick with the maps, and already have the FSC code (only took a few minutes of my payment). Course, I can't tell if it actually works until I get the stick...hope that happens by the end of the week...I'll let you know. The Euro/dollar exchange rate is better than when I was last in Germany so the total cost will vary some, based on the whim of the markets and fates.

Well, the USB stick arrived (a pretty flimsy device), installed it and took my sister to the train station. On the way home it finished. Worked fine...anyone should be able to do this and save a large amount of money verses what the dealer charges. The US/Euro exchange rate is decent now (at least for buying Euros!), and that helps, too.
