I think those figures speak for themselves, but to expand a little it's that massive 600 ft/lbs of torque which puts the grin on your face while powering through the corners of a twisty 'B' road. However, to fully appreciate the handling you really should go for AD/VDC (about the same cost of HUD, heated wheel and speed limit warning). Additionally, the adaptive bi-xenon lights are amazing for those twisty roads at night. I fully dim the instrument lighting and switch of the nav screen in those conditions and the effect is awesome, you actually see around the corners before you get there and it makes for great fun especially on the quiet unlit roads up here in Scotland. |

For me a car is about transport, and doing it in as much comfort and with as much safety as possible, and preferably without it hitting the bank balance too hard. So for me comfort seats, visi pack, active cruise, heated seats/wheel etc are all much more important than extra performance.
On the flip side, while if money was no object I'd have them, as it is I wouldn't bother with HUD, Lane Change, Blind Spot, self-park, that kind of thing... Its entirely personal choice... 5 years ago performance was the priority, but times change. IMO in the UK you can't drive a car like a 535d to its full potential without breaking some kind of law, or getting stuck in traffic, so is it really worth it? Denmark might be different... |

And of course....you can always get the guys at DMS to wave a wand over the ECU....360 BHP/680+ lb/ft...and improved MPG.

OK Mr Killjoy , Nm it is and, as an engineer I stand humbly corrected as I should clearly have been paying more attention, but either way it's bloody impressive to feel that enormous grunt throughout the RPM range. Given a choice of routes to any given destination, I'll usually opt for the twisty B roads just for the sheer pleasure of powering through the corners. Of course I use a lot more diesel that way, but at 37+ mpg it's small beer for such reward.

Oh so tempting, BUT I think the F10 ECU is a more sophisticated animal in that it alerts BMW service of any changes whenever the car is connected to your dealer's computer and that would presumably invalidate your warranty.

They are having a great deal of difficulty cracking this ECU but I think it will end up the same as the E60 ie won't be visible on a routine service but if BMW really investigated the vehicle they would find the changes. So a risk of detection remains as with the E60

No offence taken John, hence the and as you say, regardless of the numbers, the 535d is a very quick car.

This may well be apocryphal info, but with innovations such as 'connected drive' who knows what goes on under the surface. Tempting as it is to explore re-mapping, I've decided that 299 HP/600 Nm is more than enough to lose my licence!!! |
