iPhone and new Comms system

BMW have gone to alot of trouble to built these cradles for the varius iphone models out there, and they have designed apps that use the iphones to enable things like web radio/facebook and twitter via the idrive, plus of course you have full control over the music on the iphone and you can also watch videos whilst the car is stationary.

BUT you cannot use the office functionality! No SMS or emails can be read via the idrive screen, the only thing you can access is the phone book!

This is bloody annoying and I cant believe that BMW and Apple worked together to make some or all of the rest work but Apple refused to allow BMW to access SMS and emails?! My brand new Samsung Galaxy S 2 at least allows me to read SMS messages via the screen......

Should have got a BlackBerry Email, calendar, contacts and SMS.

I agree - they dropped the ball by not making the iPhone fully compatible.

Not a fan of the Blackberry, seeing as they lost 20%ish of their value only a few days ago they might not be around in the same way for too much longer!

Is BMW at fault or Apple here? I dont know but its a shit situation...its not even partial compatibility, its zero, nada, nothing!

Apple.

the iphone's iOS software needs to include the bluetooth message access profile, here is apple's list of profiles they currently support:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3647

until apple add it...no emails / text messages will you see. not BMW's issue...well I guess they could encourage apple to add it. iOS 5 is just around the corner fingers cross apple have updated their bluetooth stack to include it.

playing devils advocate i think for my own safety and life expectancy its probably better that I cannot read email/texts while driving

From what I have seen in the beta version it does not include the MAP. The whole reason I managed to get my hands on iOS 5 early, but no joy i'm afraid. Sorry to disappoint. I suppose there is a slim hope they will change it pre-release, but I think the chances are low.

Well that reply sure shot the remnants of my hopes down in flames.

Bloody livid that I pushed the corporate strategy into Apple and now we find out that 'state of the art vehicles' use Blackberry for the office comms solution. Is it just me that sees the irony in companies dropping BB for Apple and media systems ignoring Apple in favour of BB?? Either way it's a crap situation.

iOS5 BT stack or not, bluetooth has been around for long enough now that this shouldn't be an issue, especially in cars that are alledgedly designed to 'feature' the technology..

Hello:

how do you watch iPhone videos on the iDrive screen? I read it is possible, but have never seen this option, even when in Park mode. And I have the Media iPhone cradle...

Can you please walk me through the steps?

Thanks,

D.

The HTC Sensation supports MAP. my car is a 2010 build and doesn't have the office functionality so can't test it.

Cheers

You don't have to do anything; if it works (with your phone) then it works.

Connect it via bluetooth, and then select office functions on the options menu after the phone is added
