UK campaign against HID lights
Anyone here with bi-xenons worried about this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13143206
Don't know about anyone else, but in 7 months with HID lights on my F10, I've never been flashed by oncoming cars. |

First off I will state I am not a fan of bi-xenons but this.....
"Without a doubt, the lights are intimidating you so badly that you have to change the way you drive and that isn't right," he said. ....is a load of tosh. Face it mate, you're getting older and you're finding the roads more intimidating than before. I'm 23 years younger than him and I find London drivers intimidating. Living semi-rural I see my share of bi-xenons coming towards me on unlit roads and there is a glare factor. It's not like high-beams though. What put me off bi-x's was driving my mates new 320 before ordering my 520. It was on the same country roads and I found his bi-x's bounced back off the roads signs that I was being dazzled by them. Do others who have cars equipped with them find the same? |

Both myself and my wife have cars with HID's, (hers is a 4x4 so very high up) me for ten weeks and her for ten months and we've never been flashed at (although she says she wouldn't mind being flashed at, but I told her it's not that kind of forum).
I love the brightness on the lights as there are lots of unlit lanes where we live, but have noticed the glare back from road signs but can live with that. Would want a car without them after seeing how good they are, also on the other side of the fence I don't have any problems with oncoming drivers with HID's, is it just an age thing???? |

I agree that the reflection from road signs is brighter than that given off by halogens, but that's a very small negative for me. Up here in Scotland we're blessed with miles of winding unlit country roads and I find the active bi-xenons amazing.

One thing we all have in common.... Factory fitted HID, therefore self levelling etc.... The problem is the 19 yr old (and I'm only 30) with after market lights on his ford focus... There the real problem...

Nothing wrong with properly fitted HIDs, the safety benefits far outweigh any negatives (which people are going way drama-queen with). It's the DIY aftermarket stuff that causes problems when done on the cheap - although it's still not as common as some of this would have you believe..

I've had HID lights on the last couple of cars and only been flashed once or twice, and that's generally coming over the brow of a hill.
I suspect it's as much a case of someone having a personal issue with people in flash new cars with bright lights, rather than it being a genuine safety concern. I remember a few years ago there was some nutter running a website campaigning to ban daytime running lights, and that was before the new bright LED ones, it was back in the day of standard Volvo style halogen DRLs! There are far more serious issues out there, both road safety related and otherwise, that the energy could be put towards....
