N63 550i owners come in
Ive been curious about the turbo sound and just now thought to make a post about it. From the interior, My E60 535i with DCI/jb+ produced the normal turbo spool sound. However on my F10 550i stock (except for JB stage 1) the turbos sound like a low pitch posi/eaton/roots blower when they spool up.
Does anyone elses turbos sound the same?? is this normal? my car: 2012 550i M sport |

The previous owner of the first one that I test drove definitely did something to it so that you could hear the turbos. |

Or put some catless downpipes and you'll hear them spool up. You can even hear them at a cold start idle.

Did anybody really expect BMW to have you hear the turbos spooling on their top of the line 5 series (not counting the M5)? The 5 series is a luxury car first and a sports sedan a distant second. I would expect most 5 series owners to not want or care to hear their turbos.
To answer the OPs question I don't hear the turbos at all on my 550i. In my E60 535i, I did hear some turbo noise but that was the twin turbo N54 engine.

I completely agree with you, I love the sound of turbos spooling ever since I first heard it as a kid in my dad's Mercedes 300D (boy I'm old), but as I said, most 5 series drivers are more concerned with the badge on the hood.

Just to help clear things up,
The turbo spool can only be heard if the restrictive parts of the exhaust are removed. Because not only do these parts mask the sound of the turbo spool but also all the engine noise (i.e. Wastegates). In other words, remove the cats with catless downpipes, and you'll hear the turbos spool from half a mile away. But you also get the engine noise and the smell of fuel. N63intakes (which I had installed before my catless DP's) will give you some nice gains but for sound wise, it gives you the "whoosh" sound and you kind of have to bring it out. The sound doesn't occur naturally. You don't hear the turbos spool at all. You can also swap a full comp package exhaust from the M5 and you'll hear the turbos spool slightly (but that's only because twin resonators and baffles in the mufflers are removed with the comp package exhaust) |
