Question 2012 528i a 4 cylinder?

I have been reading that the 2012 528i will be a 4 cylinder. Has this been confirmed or just rumors?

Pretty sure that's what's happening. Doesn't sound good to me but time marches on.

This is the main reason I will have to "compromise" to order 535i when I order 2012 F10. I preferred N/A 528i from the test drive.

I am usually one to give manufacturers the benefit of the doubt and look forward to trying their engineering but I am with you on that bodonx, cant think of why a car the size and dynamic of an F10 would benefit from a 4cyl, guess the greenie weenie's have penetrated deep into BMW.

My other concern is that although this 4cyl derived from N55 (if I am not mistaken), I would not buy a first-year engine.

N55 is not a reliable engine too. However, BMW has tried to fix I-6 HPFP issues since 2007 (since N54).

Very good point 1st year new engines just always have problems even BMW, Porsche, Mercedes all have issues with 1st year engined going into full production!

Same HP
30 more ft-lbs at lower RPM
Probably less weight over the nose.

Aside from a bit of lag, and a lack of the noise....what's the issue?

The 520d is a nice motor. I have one and am more than happy with the power it delivers. That's a 4 cylinder lump...

+1

I don't care too much as long they keep building the mighty straight 6 as well.

In this class (F10), the smoothness of an engine take a priority over 10% gas mileage saving I think.

For 1 or 3 series, where agility is a priority, I can see Turbo I-4 as a better alternative.

Here's the upside: since the car is no longer a normally aspirated straight 6, there are a number of other cars to choose from.

Then get a 535, and you won't get laughed at. Still don't understand the big deal of having the base engine be a 4 cylinder.

If the new 528 is going to feature a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine block, wonder what the new 523 or 520 is going to have? 1.8 litre like the Mercs??

More likely the same engine with a lower tune.
