Front End Grinding

Fellow BMW fans I bought a new 2011 535i MSport in Dec and my car has been in the shop 3x and they still haven't been able to stop the grinding noise. They've had the head engineer in So Ca look at it but no fix...

Is anyone else having this issue? They claim it's the hydraulic sway bars... Thoughts?

See http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=495019 for a lengthy discussion. It seems that quite a few owners with the Dynamic Handling Package have experienced the problem and that it has been fixed with the replacement of a hydraulic valve or software update or both.

That would really piss me off. I would be looking into a buy back if I were you.

My 2011 550i had the same grinding issue in the front. An engineer high up in rank at BMW was at my dealer and addressed the problem with the ARS. A software update was performed at the engineer's request and it fixed the problem altogether.

I have a 2011 CB 550xi M Sport which was delivered on 3/17/11. I drove it for only 20 miles and heard the feared "grinding" noise. It was back in the shop after only six days and 180 miles. After researching this issue on this forum and Bimmerfest, I gave my service manager a list of all the things various other BMW F10 owners have had done to their own cars to fix the grinding issue, including the software upgrade and valve block change. Of course, BMW made my service manager perform several unhelpful things over 2-3 days before the software upgrade was finally done. Big surprise that it did not work and now we are back at square one. It is obvious there is no definitive fix as many other owners have had a software upgrade with or without the valve block change with variable success. I am running out of patience with this issue...any advice on how to expedite the repair?

I have not heard of a fix to this. I pursued 2 dealerships and they cant figure it out. One thing that I know is that its on most cars. I test drove 4 different F10 and they all had it. One explanation (and is still not acceptable to me) is that it's normal, perhaps it's doing an ABS check, sounds reasonable because I heard that Land Rover (I know, not a very good example) have this noise too.

It still bugs the crap out of me everytime I hear it, I'm so conscious of the sound that I just listen for it, perhaps hoping that it will go away, no luck yet.

If anyone finds a fix to this, please let us know.

To follow up on my above post from 3/25/11, the software upgrade was performed but the grinding persists. It is now been 6 days without my new car and BMW still has no response. I have spoken with BMW NA and demanded a per diem amount for every day my BMW is in the shop equal to what my car payment is per day. I have upheld my end of the bargain ($ down, sign contracts, etc...) and yet BMW has not upheld theirs. There can be no "joy" when my car sits at the dealer repair shop after only 6 days of driving. I assume that a valve block change is next (oh good...another 5-6 days in the shop!)

This really sucks when they have a problem like this, and if it is "normal" and "they all do that" then there's nothing much that we consumers can do about it.

It sounds to me like maybe there's an hydraulic pump that actuates these "dynamic sway bars" and that's what you guys are hearing, as it goes through a self-test or maybe charging up the system.

Best of luck to you all.

(I have the benefit of not ordering all of that fancy stuff on my car, so I'm not suffering through these issues.)

Well, just found out earlier today that the valve block change has been authorized by the BMW gods and that the part is being shipped from Chicago, should arrive 3/29/11 and work completed by 3/30/11. I hope this is "THE fix".

Harrumphfffff....

My damn brakes on my 2006 E90 have never worked right, there's something wrong with either the "soft stop" or "hill start" algorithms on the car. It was never fixed even after a half-dozen trips to the dealer (no lemon law here).

Every single loaner I had also had the same problem, as well as a sweet 335i I had my eye on.

So, it doesn't take a "fancy" feature on the car to run into gremlins on a BMW...

FINAL UPDATE...The hydraulic valve block finally arrived and after installation, the grinding noise is finally gone. I am cautiously optimistic that this is it. It sure is nice to have my new 550 back. Every time I turn the car I am hyper-sensitive to any sound but so far so good.

can you post the part numbers of the ones they replaced and I'll see if I can get mine replaced as well.

if you dont mind posting the dealer work sheet, with all your private info blocked, that would be awesome.

Owners with DHP: 'Fun Factor' vs. Reliability Issues

First post.
I have had brief test drives of the 535i and 550i with Sport Package but without Dynamic Handling Package. I liked the power and sound of the 550i, but the 535i felt a bit more agile and seemed to have adequate power to be fun (not far off a 335i).

Based on various test reports, I convinced myself that DHP is an important option, to give the car a 'traditional' BMW feel (i.e. closer to a larger 335i than a 750i). However, I have read a few posts regarding the "grinding" noise. One CA told me the Active Roll Stabilization system has been a fairly common source of problems, but BMW now has a fix.

My questions:
1. Do you consider DHP a 'must have' option?,

2. Based on what you have heard, does the ARS (grinding) problem seem to be a rare occurence?, and

3. Has BMW recognized the ARS problem and issued a service bulletin on it?

Thanks for your input

My questions:
1. Do you consider DHP a 'must have' option?
No. The car is already very good without it. If you consider yourself an auto enthusiast, then yes. Ultimately it gives you more control over the car when driven very aggressively. If you don't plan to do that, then you're ordering a bazooka to go quail hunting.

2. Based on what you have heard, does the ARS (grinding) problem seem to be a rare occurence? It's a known issue, but I wouldn't call it rampantly problematic. Of course, you, me and everyone on this forum has only anecdotal evidence. The only people that know, won't tell you.

3. Has BMW recognized the ARS problem and issued a service bulletin on it?
I haven't seen a TSB on it. I've asked the SA at my local dealer that I have a pretty good relation with, and he says the only major issue he's seen with the F10 are the tires and that's not really F10 specific.

If you are worried about reliability of the system, I understand. This car has a lot of technology on it that makes it's long term reliability very problematic. Ultimatley, you have to get what you want and not worry about that because
a. you'll drive yourself to an early grave.
b. there are more important things in life.
I've seen cars that were never touched and went on without any problems for a long time and others that have been handled with kid gloves that were absolute pigs. I think a lot of it is just luck of the draw.
