Car Wonders/Moves Around a lot at Freeway Speeds
Guys,
Ive owned my F10 550i for about 6 months and I cant seem to get over how much this car seems to wander/move around at hwy speed. My E60 M5 would catch the ruts in the freeway and move around but nothing compared to how bad this F10 does. It almost feels like there is a problem with the steering. Does anyone else experience this? Is there something I should have the dealership look at? Thanks for your advice and help!!! Mike |

From my own experience with my F10, times when I've notice a little wandering are when:
- Tires are balding or nearly bald - Tires are NOT at the ideal pressures (even w/functioning TPMS) I've never had actual mechanical issues that contributed to wandering. |

if tire pressures are fine than check for worn tie rods. that will give you that wandering feeling

Tire pressure and/or alignment.
Recently fixed a slight toe mis-alignment up front and it made a world of difference. F10 steering naturally is a bit on the light side though, IMO. |

I drove across Pennsylvania yesterday in high winds. My F10 was rock solid. I'm on board with the tires or tire rod opinion. My E60 is scary to drive when the tires have outlived their usefulness.

A few things as I read:
First - no, the F10 chassis is generally very stable. - alignment would be the first thing to check - worn tie rods and other ball joints are a possibility, but we haven't seen a lot of that on F10s yet - how many miles on the car? - current wear level on the tires? Same brand/model? Tire pressures set to door sticker? Since you've only had the car 6 months, this one may be tough to answer: - were the tires always on THAT car, or possibly swapped around from another car by the seller/selling dealer? - were the tires rotated since they were new? There's another thread where I told my story where I personally observed dodgy stability and handling when I have rotated tires on BMWs (which is against BMWs own recommendation). Again, a seller/dealer could have done a "tire rotation" because the rears were worn more than the fronts (normal) or because it's a normal thing to do on other car brands or whatever... If you DIY, and you think this is a possibility, you could always do a front/rear rotation and see if the problem goes away. With a correct alignment, most BMWs will wear out rears before fronts - if you see the opposite wear pattern on your car take note - bad alignment or someone rotated the tires. |

Had the exact same issue although on my 520d
turned out to be alignment which was waaaaay out. make sure you find someone who has the hunter 4 wheel alignment/KDS machine. it does make a difference. car tracks true and no waving about on the motorway/'freeway' that and make sure tyres are matched for pressure and tread pattern good luck |

Guys,
Thanks for all your responses. I did replace the rear tires so they are different from the front. I think Im going to have the alignment checked, if thats good then Ill have them check the tie rods and then do the front tires. Im due for an oil change so timing will work out well for this service. Thanks |

Keep in mind that after your tires have developed the wrong tire wear on them sometimes with an alignment the car may pull want to pull because of it

You need down force, look into some wings.
In reality its probably your alignment. |
