Is there a DIY out there to show replacement of this switch? I tried searching but didn't see it...

It is very simple. Remove the trim piece to the left of your steering wheel (A screwdriver wrapped in a thin cloth will do the trick if you don't have a trim removal tool). This is reveal three torx screws holding the headlight switch in place. Remove the three screws and the switch will now be loose. Unplug wire harness and replace with Euro switch. Put everything back in reverse order. Total time is about 5 mins (literally).

this might be a dumb question, but what's the benefit of having the rear fog light when you have 2 big ass break light?

Brake lights are only illuminated when you are......... you guessed it, BRAKING. Rear fog lights are to help drivers see you up ahead in the distance during foggy conditions (whether you are braking or not). Probably not that useful in your typical US metropolitan area, but if you ever drive in mountainous areas where fog can be prevalent, they can come in useful. This is just another example of equipment that is standard on the European versions of our vehicles, but BMW has deemed Americans too dumb to appreciate how to use properly. Ever wonder why the tire pressure and temperature readings have been disabled in US spec vehicles??????

I agree on all counts. To show you how in some ways European regulations are ahead of ours, rear fog lights are mandatory in Belgium, because they are very useful in fog and heavy rain - something that happens often in Belgium. They do work and help avoid you getting rammed from behind in low vis conditions. The trick is to remember to turn them off when you don't need them (also gets you a fine in Belgium if you do leave them on) - they are bright and a distraction to other drivers when conditions are clear. I've lost count of how many times I see someone with their rear fogs turned on in North America (usually on an Audi as they seem to have them available here) in perfectly clear driving conditions.

To be honest, as a "chronic modder" (I have been modding my cars since 1995) I enjoy having features in my car that the person next to me with the same car might not. Besides low visibility conditions, I also use them occasionally to get tailgaters off my rear bumper. When I turn them on it looks like I am braking, so they fall back. Just as effective as actually braking, but without the risk of getting rear ended.

Actually, this is the only reason why I was considering upgrading switch.

Does this mean your brake lights are always on?

I have this coded on my car as well! That's what you call belt and suspenders.

I think the rear access lights help others see your car in low visibilty situations but doesn't get the tailgaters to back off.

So then you're just riding around with your "rear fog lights" on anyway like most Audi and Jag drivers who don't know to work the controls in their vehicles . Since yours are on all of the time, you have no "brake force display" to warn people behind you if you are panic braking.

I'm glad we're far away from each other, I sure wouldn't want to follow you.
